Spurs stories

Eddie Marsan

One of our most-loved actors, Eddie Marsan first took the bus from Bethnal Green to White Hart Lane at the age of 10. Unlike many fans though, his route into Spurs wasn’t following family tradition - in fact, far from it!

“My old man’s a Gooner. That’s one of the reasons I became a Spurs fan. I’ve a philosophy in life - whatever he does, I do something different!”
Eddie Marsan

That was back in 1978.

It’s safe to say much has changed in Eddie’s life since then. Initially serving an apprenticeship as a printer, Eddie took a different path into acting, initially training at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in Peckham, into TV (The Bill, Casualty, Eastenders, Grange Hill) and then film, including early roles in the likes of Gangster No. 1, 21 Grams and Vera Drake.

He’s now a household name both here and in America, where he played Terry Donovan, brother of Ray, in the series Ray Donovan over seven years and 80 episodes. More recently, he’s appeared in Ridley Road, played the lead in ITV’s The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe and is now in Franklin with Michael Douglas on Netflix.

On the big screen, he’s just played Amy Winehouse’s father Mitch in the biopic Back To Black – and, during our interview on The Warm Up preview show ahead of the Premier League clash against Burnley, was quick to point out that Mitch is also a Spurs fan. “I know he’s here somewhere!”

"I’ve been a Spurs fan since I was about 10...."

"My next-door neighbours in Bethnal Green brought me down. There used to be a train from Cambridge Heath Road to White Hart Lane. I was here for the 1984 UEFA Cup Final, when Tony Parks saved the penalty. I was here the game before when Barcelona kicked us off the park. My old man’s a Gooner. That’s one of the reasons I became a Spurs fan. I’ve a philosophy in life, whatever he does, I do something different! My next-door neighbours took me, two young boys, they were like big brothers to me, and it was wonderful."

"My favourite player was Micky Hazard..."

"Micky Hazard had curly hair, I had curly hair, so I thought, ‘he’s my favourite player’. Early memories... I remember nearly getting bitten by a police dog once, on the way in. I remember being so blown away by being so close to the pitch. I remember almost being able to touch Ray Clemence, right at the front. That used to blow me away, it was incredible. I can’t remember my first game, but I remember an early one when we lost against Liverpool, we were 2-0 up, Kenny Dalglish scored, I think it went through Ray Clemence’s legs! That’s the earliest I remember."

"I’m very proud of the film, it’s a wonderful tribute to Amy..."

"The funny thing is, I know Mitch Winehouse is here (in the stadium) somewhere. I’ve just played him in the film Back To Black, and I know he’s here. He’s a Spurs fan. When you get to know Mitch, you realise that he’s full of love for his daughter, full of love for his family. I wouldn’t have made a film that demonised him, wouldn’t have made a film that sanitised him. I’ve got four teenage kids, and being a parent is about doing your best, loving them, worrying about them and sometimes not getting it right. The film is also a wonderful tribute to Amy's family and the love they gave her. It makes people more compassionate towards people who are suffering from addiction, and I think that’s a great thing. Also, you celebrate her brilliant music."
