We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of our former winger Robert Wilkie, who passed away on Thursday 6 June, at the age of 88.
Born in Dundee on 7 October, 1935 and #429 on our Legacy Numbers list, Robert, an amateur player with both Nottingham Forest and Notts County during his National Service, joined us from Lochee Harp, Dundee, in December, 1956.
Having impressed at reserve and 'A' team level, 'Bob' went on to make his debut and only competitive first team appearance for us against Burnley in the old First Division on 29 April, 1957, the final day of the 1956/57 campaign. Robert, 21 at the time, lined up alongside the likes of Peter Baker, Tony Marchi, Tommy Harmer and Bobby Smith in a 1-0 loss at Turf Moor that afternoon as we finished runners-up, eight points behind champions Manchester United.
Robert gained further first team experience at the end of his first season at Spurs when he was part of the travelling party for a post-season tour of North America, a five-week trip from 10 May-17 June. He started and scored in the second tour match against 'Essex County All Stars' in Windsor, Detroit, and appeared again against ‘Ontario All Stars’ in Ontario.
Robert remained a regular goalscorer for the A team in the Eastern Counties League and had a spell at Romford in 1961 before departing the Club in June, 1962.
We send our condolences to Robert’s family and friends at this sad time.
