Micky van de Ven made his international tournament debut on Sunday afternoon, coming off the bench to help the Netherlands see out a 2-1 win over Poland in their opening game at Euro 2024.
The defender, 23, came on for Nathan Ake three minutes from the end of normal time, moments after fellow substitute Wout Weghorst had swept in what turned out to be the winner.
It was a fifth senior cap for Micky, whose nation had fallen behind early at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion through Adam Buksa before Cody Gakpo levelled.
The Netherlands subsequently pushed on to pick up maximum points, setting down an early marker in Group D.
Vicario’s tournament gets underway
Guglielmo Vicario was the first of our players at Euro 2024 to see his nation take to the field when Italy beat Albania 2-1 on Saturday.
The goalkeeper was an unused substitute for the Italians, who recovered from conceding inside the opening minute to take maximum points from their Group B opener in Dortmund.
