Euro 2024 | Micky features in Netherlands’ clash with Austria

Tue 25 June 2024, 19:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Micky van de Ven had his most significant amount of game time to date at Euro 2024, but couldn’t help his Netherlands side take any points from a rip-roaring game against Austria on Tuesday.

The defender, who featured for the last couple of minutes in his country’s opening match against Poland before remaining an unused substitute last time out against France, this time came off the bench in the 65th minute in place of Nathan Ake at left-back and made some impressive advances down that side of the pitch in what turned out to be a 3-2 defeat in Berlin.

The Netherlands were 2-1 down at the time of Micky’s introduction but after Memphis Depay’s equaliser, Austria won it through Marcel Sabitzer 10 minutes from time.

An own goal from Donyell Malen and a header from Romano Schmid had seen Austria take the lead twice earlier in the game, with Cody Gakpo netting the Netherlands’ initial reply.

The Dutch knew they were already through to the last 16 after Monday’s results elsewhere at the tournament – the defeat to Austria means they’ve finished third in Group D, but their total of four points means they’ll advance as one of the best third-placed sides. Austria have topped the group, with France going through in second.

The Netherlands’ next opponents will be confirmed after the group stage matches are completed on Wednesday.
