Euro 2024 | Defenders to face each other as our players learn last 16 opponents

Wed 26 June 2024, 23:22|Tottenham Hotspur

Two of our players will find themselves in opposition to one another in the round of 16 at Euro 2024 after the remaining knockout ties were confirmed on Wednesday night.

Guglielmo Vicario’s Italy had already been confirmed to face Switzerland on Saturday, swiftly followed that day by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Denmark taking on host nation Germany.

But after the last of the group stage games were completed, our other two players at the tournament – Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin – have now found out the identity of their opponents in the next round... each other!

That’s after Micky’s Netherlands, third in Group D, were pitted against Radu’s Romania, who topped Group E after a 1-1 draw with Slovakia earlier on Wednesday.

Our defensive duo have had differing amounts of game time at the tournament so far – Radu has started every match for Romania, while Micky has featured as a second-half substitute in two of the Netherlands’ three games to date.

In the last few days, Switzerland and Guglielmo’s Italy finished second in Groups A and B respectively, while Pierre’s Denmark were the runners-up in Group C, earning a meeting with Group A winners Germany.

Goalkeeper ‘Vic’ has been an unused substitute for the Italians thus far, while Pierre has started every game for Denmark.

Here’s the full list of last 16 ties involving our players set to take place over the coming days (all kick-off times are UK)...
