2024 Copa America | Bentancur scores, looks set to join Romero and Lo Celso in knockouts

Rodrigo Bentancur stepped off the bench to complete the scoring for Uruguay as they all-but secured their place in the knockout stages of the 2024 Copa America with a 5-0 win over Bolivia in the early hours of this morning (Friday 28 June).

The midfielder replaced Federico Valverde, who had netted Uruguay’s fourth goal, in the 86th minute in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and with a minute left of normal time, planted home a header to round off the win.

Facundo Pellistri, Darwin Nunez and Maximiliano Araujo were also on target.

With two wins from two and goal difference currently in their favour, Uruguay are virtually assured of a place in the next round, unless they lose to the USA on Tuesday morning and Panama beat Bolivia in the other game in Group C. A point or more against the States would see them through as group winners.

Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso have already qualified for the knockout stages with Argentina.

They’ve won both of their games in Group A so far – which was mathematically enough to advance – and are next in action against Peru in the early hours of Sunday morning.
