My team-mate, my friend, my family...

From Toronto to Tokyo, Ben Davies celebrates a special 10-year anniversary with Spurs today.

Signed during our tour of USA and Canada on 23 July, 2014, we’re back on the road again as the Wales defender reaches 10 years at the Club.

Ben’s spent nine of those years as a team-mate of Heung-Min Son. The pair have forged a close friendship over the years, extending beyond football. Sonny is Godfather to Ben’s son, Ralph and, when Sonny hit 400 appearances for us, Ben told us all about ‘my mate Sonny’ in this special feature.

Now Ben has reached a decade at Spurs, there was only person to ask about his friend, on and off the pitch – take it away, Sonny…

"We’ve become close and shared so many memories on and off the pitch. I would do anything for him."

"Ben Davies."

"What a guy..."

"I don’t have any bad words, only good words. He’s a family man, such a warm heart and so smart, the smartest guy I’ve seen. Our friendship has grown massively over the years. I’ve been at clubs where I’ve been close to players, but Ben has been really special, next level. I would say he’s my family member, someone I can really trust. If I’m struggling, if I need some advice, I’ll always ask Ben. He’s someone I’ve always trusted.

"I left Korea at 16 and when you leave a country at such an early age… you don’t have many friends, and Ben is the only one I would say is like that. He’s a fantastic guy. He’s a guy, where, if you need someone to say difficult words, he’s the one who steps up and says those things, words that make you wake up. I’m in a position now where if I say something, people will probably say, ‘yes, you’re right’, but Ben is the guy who will step up and say, ‘no, that’s not right’, and that’s so impressive."

The player...

"On the pitch, Ben is so consistent, never complains, works so hard, plays for the team. We live for football. When we go out for dinner, or brunch with his wife and his son, we always end up talking about football. He loves football, and, as a player, he’s never been downhill. In this football world, it’s very important that you are consistent in a professional way, that’s what he does, and why he’s been playing in the Premier League for 10 years. That’s so difficult.

"He’s a consummate professional, a player everyone can look up to. For me, he’s a role model. Look, everyone will say he’s a bit underrated. Whenever he's had to step up, he’s always shined and helped the team in lots of different circumstances. That’s his skill. He’s always there for the team, a team player and always there for the club."

The person...

"I’m Godfather to Ben’s son, Ralph. To be invited was an unbelievable feeling. At our age now, a lot of friends, a lot of players have wives, babies, life has changed so quickly. Ben invited me into his family in an amazing way. To be Godfather… I’ve never felt like this, even though it’s not my son, I was getting emotional, and I was so grateful that Ben thought of me in that way.

"A couple of days ago we had his first birthday party, a fantastic feeling. So, it’s 10 years for Ben at Spurs and we’ve known each other for nine years now. We’ve become close and shared so many memories on and off the pitch. I would do anything for him."
