Drew Spence: “It was a no-brainer for me to stay”

Drew Spence is keen to build on the progress made last season as she put pen to paper on a new contract with the Club.

The experienced midfielder joined us in the summer of 2022 and has been a key figure in our side over the last two seasons, flourishing in the closing stages of the 2023/24 campaign, where she netted two goals and registered one assist in the final three Barclays Women’s Super League games.

Rewarded with a new contract that will run until 2026, the 31-year-old spoke of her determination to help maintain the Club’s growth over the last 12 months and the family environment at Hotspur Way.

“I’m over the moon,” she told SPURSPLAY. “We made good progress in the last season and it was a no-brainer for me to stay here, I’m looking forward to seeing what the Club can do over the next two years.

“My biggest worry when I left my previous club is I would never find that family environment again, but I feel I have found that here. I feel so comfortable here, all the girls get on and, for me, that’s the most important thing.”

Drew has wealth of experience in England’s top-flight division, winning 11 major trophies in her career to date, including five WSL titles, so us reaching the Adobe Women’s FA Cup for the first time in May, 2024, was another reason she committed her future with the Club.

“When I came here I had a lot of experience of playing for a club that won a lot of trophies, so it was my goal to get to the final… I was proud of us to get there,” Drew said.

“When you look back, it’s a moment that was a bit disappointing but you just have to look at the progress made. The season before we were battling relegation, so to go from that to then reaching the final and plenty of progress in the league was key for me to stay.”

Asked about helping the younger players in the group, she said: “I had great leaders that I could look up to, great team-mates, and you just have to help them every day.

“We have a lot of players with plenty of experience, internationally and at club level, so we do have a young squad but sometimes you need that balance with young and old… I wouldn’t say I’m old though, maybe more seasoned.”

Pre-season got back underway at our Enfield training base on Monday (15 July) with a number of players returning and Drew, who is set to be back in training next week, was clear on the aims heading into the new campaign.

“Continuing to progress and continuing to play the style of football that we love, continue to learn more from Robert, learn more from the girls and go one step further than last year."

When asked about our Lilywhite fanbase, she added: “Just thank you for your support, we always hear you at Brisbane Road and it was massive for us at Wembley as well, to see how many fans came to support us was a massive highlight. We are glad that we made them proud and we hope to see them turn out in their numbers every week.”
