Our former captain Ledley King embarked on a karting tour of the streets of Tokyo during the first stop of our pre-season tour in Asia.

He was joined by fellow Club legend Ossie Ardiles, who spent many years living in Japan during his spell managing four clubs in the J-League. Ossie played tour guide and harked back memories of his time living in the city as he directed Ledley through some of Tokyo’s most iconic locations.

Ledley, meanwhile, thrilled onlookers by taking on the role as lead driver.

The tour began in Tokyo Bay in the industrial area of Shin-Kiba before moving onto Tatsumi, an area known for featuring the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, which held the swimming in the recent Tokyo Olympics.

Ledley then set off for the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the districts of Shibakoen to Odaiba, and gets its name from the striking rainbow-coloured lighting display it hosts at night.

Next stop was the Tokyo Tower, an iconic communications platform in the heart of the city, which was built in 1958, stands at 333 metres and was the tallest artificial structure in Japan until 2010.

The group then passed the Roppongi district, an area known for its nightlife, before passing the Japan National Stadium, where our fixture against Vissel Kobe will be played this Saturday 27th July.

The final stop was the Shibuya Scramble Crossing. The crossing is renowned for being one of the busiest intersections in the world, where traffic signals are synchronised to allow pedestrians to cross in every direction simultaneously.

Ledley said: “I’ve had a fantastic day; it’s been such a great way to see Tokyo and some of the amazing landmarks in the city.”

Ossie added: “That was absolutely brilliant! I was really impressed with Ledley, it is not easy to drive in a new city, but he did incredibly well. Seeing Tokyo from this perspective was superb, and I remembered most of the places we visited from my time living in Japan, particularly the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower.”
