Spurs in Japan | Celebrating Tottenham Hotspaw with Statue of Hachiko visit

Sat 27 July 2024, 08:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Executive Director and Co-Chair of the Tottenham Hotspaw Supporters’ Club, Donna-Maria Cullen, visited the Statue of Hachiko to celebrate one of our newest supporters’ groups.

She was joined by chairman Daniel Levy, as well as our legends Ledley King and Ossie Ardiles, on the visit to the statue, which is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

The statue commemorates the true story of a Japanese Akito dog Hachiko who, after the death of his owner Ueno Hidesaburoin in 1925, returned to the Shibuya Station every day to wait loyally for his owner to arrive back from his daily commute.

Tottenham Hotspur is the Club for dog lovers and recently launched Tottenham Hotspaw as the first ever supporters’ club for dog-owners to join alongside their beloved pets.

The group allows fans to demonstrate their love for the Club alongside their pets and now has its own unique identity following the recent unveiling of a new logo to its members. Membership of the group also provides opportunities to take part in fundraising activities and events in support of All Dogs Matter – a charity that works in and around London to transform the lives of unwanted and abandoned dogs.

The tour also included a visit to Zojoji Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Tokyo. Established in 1393, it became the main temple of the Jodo sect in the Kanto region. The temple gained prominence during the Edo period when it served as the family temple for the Tokugawa shoguns, who ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. The temple now features an iconic backdrop of the Tokyo tower.

Embracing local culture and history has always been an integral part of the Club’s overseas tours, and we are proud to use our time in Japan to learn about and show respect for the country’s heritage.
