Hearts history | The 'world championship', a centenary game and Harry's debut...
Wed 17 July 2024, 09:00|Tottenham Hotspur
As we prepare to meet Heart of Midlothian as part of the Edinburgh side's 150th anniversary celebrations at Tynecastle on Wednesday evening (7pm UK), we take a look back at some notable encounters that go all the way back to 1901...
The 'world championship' - 1901/02
Our first games in 1901 and 1902 were billed as 'The Championship of the World' as both teams had lifted their respective national cup competition in April of that year. We made history by becoming the first - and still only - non-league side to win the FA Cup when we beat Sheffield United in a replay while Hearts toppled Celtic 4-3 in the Scottish Cup final at Ibrox. Both trophies were on display as we met on 2 September, 1901 at in front of 12,000 at White Hart Lane, in a game that ended goalless. The return match took place in Edinburgh on 2 January, 1902, as we took a break from Southern League action to travel to Scotland. Hearts came out on top 3-1 in front of 8,000 fans at Tynecastle.
Mackay on target - for Hearts! 1956
We faced Hearts twice in quick succession as the Anglo-Scottish Floodlight Trophy began a three-season stint during 1955/56. It was intended to be a 'British League' under floodlights, but the Football League and Scottish FA banned competitive floodlit games so the fixtures were played as friendlies. We actually faced Hearts at Easter Road - floodlights hadn't been installed at Tynecastle - on 15 October, 1956. The home side won 3-2 with a certain Dave Mackay - an all-time great of both clubs - on target for Hearts. Terry Dyson and Tommy Harmer scored our goals in front of 17,000. The return was on 12 November, 1956 with both teams top of their respective leagues. We took this one 4-2 thanks to a Bobby Smith hat-trick and one goal from Alfie Stokes.
Hearts' centenary game - 1974
We travelled to Edinburgh for three friendlies in six years - a 1-1 draw in 1969, 2-0 loss in 1971 and then Hearts' centenary match on 3 August, 1974. Pat Jennings was in fine form in a 1-1 draw in front of 13,326. Phil Holder set up John Pratt for our equaliser six minutes from time.
Gary and Gazza - 1990
Fresh from their heroics for England in Italia 90, Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker lined up in a friendly against Hearts on 13 August, 1990. Gazza was booked after just 12 minutes but later set up our equaliser in a 2-2 draw, clipping in a free-kick that was headed home by David Howells in a match watched by 18,068 at Tynecastle.
Last time out at Tynecastle - 2011
We last faced Hearts in Edinburgh in the UEFA Europa League play-offs in August, 2011. We'd just reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League at the first attempt in 2010/11 and finished fifth in the Premier League. Hearts finished third in the SPL. Brimming with class and confidence, Harry Redknapp's team led early through Rafa van der Vaart, 3-0 by half-time and eventually 5-0. Jermain Defoe, Jake Livermore, Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon joined Rafa on the scoresheet.
Harry's debut - 2011
A week after that convincing first leg, we played out a goalless draw in the second leg at the Lane, a match notable for the debut of a young striker making his name in the Academy - Harry Kane. Harry won but then missed a penalty as fellow Academy graduates Jake Livermore, Ryan Fredericks and Tom Carroll all started, with Jake Nicholson coming off the bench in the second half. It would be another three years before Harry's breakthrough in 2014/15 - the rest is Spurs history.
