Copa America and Euro 2024 | Micky’s Netherlands eliminate Radu’s Romania

Tue 02 July 2024, 19:58|Tottenham Hotspur

Two of our defenders went head-to-head in the round of 16 at Euro 2024 on Tuesday evening – and it was Micky van de Ven who ultimately won out against Radu Dragusin, as the Netherlands secured a 3-0 win over Romania in Munich.

As has been the case throughout the tournament, Radu started for Romania and produced another full, committed shift at the heart of their defence while Micky replaced Nathan Ake at left-back for the Netherlands in the second half.

The score was 1-0 when Micky was introduced in the 69th minute, but two late goals from fellow substitute Donyell Malen gave the scoreline a more convincing look – one that seemed harsh on Romania.

The result means Radu must now head home, while Micky – our sole surviving player at the tournament – and his fellow countrymen can look forward to facing Turkey in the quarter-finals on Saturday night (8pm UK).

Previously on Tuesday, in the early hours of the morning, Rodrigo Bentancur again featured as a late substitute as Uruguay maintained their 100 per cent record at the Copa America with a 1-0 victory over host nation the USA in Kansas City, Missouri.

With his side leading through Mathias Olivera’s second-half goal, Rodrigo came on in the 79th minute as Uruguay saw out the win to consolidate top spot in Group C with three wins out of three.

The result saw the States eliminated from the competition, with Uruguay now set to face the runners-up from Group D in the last eight on Sunday morning (2am UK).
