Tottenham Hotspur is proud to be supporting Green Football Weekend, a campaign to raise awareness of how individual action can take the fight to climate change.

In the lead up to Green Football Weekend (February 2-5), the Club will be highlighting steps fans can take to reduce their own carbon footprint in a number of areas, with the help of expert environmental journalist, Anna Turns.

In this segment, Anna discusses best practices regarding energy efficiency...

What the Club does

  • The building fabric of the stadium has been designed to be highly insulated to reduce heating and cooling demands. Other aspects of the building design include insulation, solar shading and building fabric thermal performance that reduce the need for additional energy usage.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from the stadium are around 50% less than a stadium built 10 years ago, and the entire development is targeting a 22% improvement on the Building Regulations baseline.
  • Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s technology infrastructure, developed in partnership with HPE and Aruba, allows for the consumption of less power during periods of low activity.
  • LED lighting (including floodlights) and high-efficiency building services systems are in place to reduce energy use.
  • A range of other initiatives are in place including intelligent controls, attenuation water tanks and green roofs. Building management system in place across all properties developed by Schneider.

Anna's tips

“Even in residential properties, excess energy is a huge untapped resource - we’re literally throwing money down the drain and out of the window when hot water gets flushed away or steam escapes out of the bathroom window. So, making that waste more visible and really valuing every kilowatt of energy we use is the first step.

“By getting to know your own energy habits, the quick wins will become more obvious, and you can drastically reduce your energy bills too. Every stadium, office, apartment or school is part of a wider energy ecosystem, and we all have an important role to play in streamlining our energy usage, wherever we live, work or play.”

Top tips

  1. GET SMART - install a smart meter to track your energy usage and notice any spikes when devices are turned on and off in real-time.
  2. TIME TO SHOWER - electric showers are one of the most energy-consuming appliances in the home, so try shortening your shower to five minutes or less by fixing an hourglass timer to your bathroom tiles.
  3. TAKE CONTROL - install thermostat valves to your radiators so you can control temperature settings from your smartphone and schedule heat for exactly where and when you need it.
