Pape Matar Sarr's Senegal got their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title defence off to the ideal start as they swept past Gambia in Yamoussoukro.
Champions of the continental championship in 2022 for the first time, the Lions of Teranga kicked-off their campaign at the 2023 AFCON by defeating the Gambia 3-0.
Opening their goalscoring account for the tournament within four minutes of the first whistle as Marseille midfielder Papa Gueye struck early at the Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro, the threat of the Gambia, who are ranked 130th in the world, was then reduced in first half injury-time as Cardiff City's Ebou Adams was shown a red card.
Senegal then asserted their dominance in the second period with Metz's Lamine Camara hitting a brace, which included a stunning second which he curled home from the edge of the box, to ensure maximum points and the perfect start.
Pape, who we last saw in action on New Year's Eve as he struck the opener in our 3-1 win over AFC Bournemouth before being forced off through injury before signing a new deal with the Club, was an unused substitute for the game.
