Spurs 1-0 Burnley

Emirates FA Cup Third Round

A wonderful strike from Pedro Porro was enough to book our place in the FA Cup fourth round after a closely-fought encounter with Burnley on Friday evening.

Here is the key action from our first FA Cup fixture of the season...

  • A goalless first half, Zeki Amdouni spurning the best chance for the visitors.
  • Brennan Johnson's volley kept out by Arijanet Muric after the break.
  • A screamer to break the deadlock, Pedro Porro rifling home from 25 yards.
  • Amdouni flicks an effort over the bar in the 98th minute as we hold on.

The report in full...

The Spanish full-back hit a superb 25-yard rocket to break the deadlock with 12 minutes remaining of the third round tie at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which proved to be the match-winner as both sides found it difficult to create clear-cut chances throughout the game.

Vincent Kompany’s side went close to a last-gasp equaliser but Zeki Amdouni flicked an effort over the bar just seconds before the final whistle.

Both sides had a couple of early chances with Anass Zaroury lashing high and wide for the visitors while Wilson Odobert tested Guglielmo Vicario with a long-ranger that the goalkeeper comfortably pushed away on seven minutes. At the other end, a lovely ball from Oliver Skipp played in Richarlison but he dragged his effort wide before Brennan Johnson cut in from the left and forced Arijanet Muric into a diving save with a right-foot curler.

The best chance of the half went the way of the Clarets in the 27th minute. Zaroury dinked the ball over our defence which found Amdouni making a run in behind, he was face-to-face with Vicario 10 yards out but the ball got stuck under his feet and, when he did eventually take control, lifted his shot over the bar. It was a real let-off.

Good chances were few and far between for the remainder of the half. We had plenty of the possession but lacked a killer pass in the final third while Burnley looked to hit us on the counter, Zaroury firing over from 20 yards on the stroke of half-time.

It was a similar story after the break, neither side really carving out anything too dangerous as Dejan Kulusevski curled over, Josh Cullen drilled wide for the visitors and Johnson hit a fierce shot straight at Muric. Destiny Udogie then got down the left on 66 minutes and delivered a deep cross which Johnson met with a sweet volley, but Muric got across well to parry it away.

It took a long time to come but when it did arrive, the opening goal was worth the wait. We’d just gone close when Richarlison failed to connect with Kulusevski’s cross and Muric gathered the loose ball. He bowled it out quickly to Amdouni but Porro was onto him in a flash, winning the ball before advancing a few yards and hitting a right-foot screamer that flew into the top corner.

We made changes soon after with Ryan Sessegnon - making his return from a long injury lay-off - Dane Scarlett, back in our colours after his loan spell at Ipswich Town, and Jamie Donley all coming on. Sessegnon almost curled home our second moments later.

Burnley applied late pressure as they searched for the equaliser, almost finding it in the final seconds of seven added minutes. First, Hannes Delcroix was in the right place for a cut-back from the left flank and his shot was heading in but Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg blocked it on the edge of the six-yard box.

From the resulting corner, goalkeeper Muric went up for one last salvage attempt and got up to flick the ball on to Amdouni, only for the Burnley striker to knock it over the bar from eight yards out.

In team news, Ange Postecoglou made two changes from the weekend’s win over AFC Bournemouth with Skipp and Kulusevski coming in for Pape Matar Sarr and Heung-Min Son, who are both now on international duty. Rodrigo Bentancur captained the team for the first time, while Sessegnon and Micky van de Ven returned from lengthy injury lay-offs and were among the substitutes.

Burnley made five changes from the team that lost 3-2 at Aston Villa on 30 December, while our former Development Squad goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux was on the Clarets’ bench.

Ange's verdict...

“You can sit there and analyse it, but ultimately in a cup competition it's about being successful to get through to the next round, because in every game you're going to play in a knockout competition it's going to take something on the day to get it done. Sometimes that can be something conventional, sometimes it's unconventional or something special like tonight - as long as it gets the job done. The goal was special, and I probably had the best view in the house. As soon as it left his boot it was going in. Credit to Pedro. He’s been outstanding for us this year. He works awfully hard at his game, but he’s also an exceptional footballer. He’s been a bit unlucky with a few strikes, but the way the game was going, we were going to need something a bit special, because we’d been a bit wasteful in front of goal.”
