Spurs vs Burnley | Ben's players to watch, Rob's analysis

Fri 05 January 2024, 13:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Club commentator Rob Daly and Ben Haines, presenter of Inside Spurs, The Warm Up and The Review Show take a closer look at Burnley ahead of this evening's FA Cup third round tie at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (8pm UK).

Ben's players to watch

"We had to go to the bottom of the well and really dig deep to come through late time out against Bournemouth, one of the most in-form sides in the Premier League. As ever, when a squad is being tested to it’s maximum with so many injuries, big characters are required and it really felt as though a lot of players stepped up last week to get us over the line. It's great to be able to park the Premier League for a week or so to allow a few players to slot back in - the big news for this week and one of my men to watch out for is Micky van de Ven. He's returned to training with the group and Ange Postecoglou has hinted that he could be involved in the squad, which would be incredibly good news with Manchester United on the horizon (14 January) as well. Alongside Micky, a huge shout for Rodrigo Bentancur, who had a great hour against Bournemouth and Giovani Lo Celso, who was absolutely brilliant and seems to be really enjoying his football at the moment, his quality on the ball could have a massive impact for us against Burnley.

On the flip side, Burnley come into this one having won just five games in all competitions all season, they’ve won just one of their last six in the Premier League too. Vincent Kompany said this week that Spurs were the right team at the right time... but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a little bit of rotation on the Burnley front. I’d expect Spurs to have a lot of opportunities so James Trafford will have a very big role to play in goal for The Clarets. He’s made 17 saves in his last three games and performed admirably within that time, despite Burnley losing all three."

Talking tactics with Rob

"Burnley were extremely competitive in their 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa last time out, when they played much of the second half with 10 men after Sander Berge's red card - he's suspended for this cup tie. I watched the Liverpool game on Boxing Day and they were very open, leaving big gaps in midfield in a 4-4-2, thinking that Giovani Lo Celso could capitalise on those spaces to pick his passes, as he did so well in the win against Bournemouth on New Year's Eve. Burnley will play out from the back and Vincent Kompany said they will have to pay a bit of a price this season for James Trafford and the team learning how to do that at this level. If you think of recent goals Spurs have scored against Forest and Bournemouth, where they've forced the goalkeeper into a loose pass, or pounced upon a clearance, I feel they could find some joy pressing high up the pitch. Burnley are missing Luca Koleosho, that's a big absentee for them, but Lyle Foster, who scored against Spurs in the 5-2 win at Turf Moor in September, is in fine form - four goals, three assists in his last 11 matches, he'll surely play up front. Indeed, Kompany said he won't rotate too much. From a Spurs point of view, you'd imagine Dejan Kulusevski, back after suspension, comes in for Heung-Min Son, who has now travelled to the Asia Cup. Maybe Brennan Johnson goes to the left, Deki to the right, and I wonder if Dane Scarlett could be involved in the squad, now Alejo Veliz is unfortunately injured. Either way, I'm sure Spurs will go for it!"
