Opposition watch | United's form and players to watch ahead of Sunday's clash

Thu 11 January 2024, 13:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Old Trafford awaits for what is always one of the big days on the calendar - here's a closer look at United ahead of Sunday's potential cracker in the Premier League (4.30pm UK).

Form

Pundits will say that United have been a bit 'hit and miss' in this Premier League campaign, and that's what the table says in black and white - United have won 10 and lost nine of their 20 matches so far this term, drawing just once. Not surprisingly, that's reflected in their recent form - their last eight games in the Premier League read WLWLDLWL. There have been some fine performances in there, though, not least a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 at Old Trafford, and the disciplined display in the goalless draw at Anfield - one of only two matches in 10 Liverpool have failed to win at home this season.

Players to watch

Alejandro Garnacho has probably already claimed 'Goal of the Season' with his stunning overhead kick at Everton, and he's in form, two goals and three assists in his 18 matches in the Premier League this term. Despite United's up and down form, goalkeeper Andre Onana is joint-top of the clean sheet chart with six and an ever-present. Captain Bruno Fernandes pulls the strings centrally and is a threat - he's in the league's top 10 in terms of shots with 47 - the only midfielder in that top 10. He's also 300 clear in terms of United's passing stats with 1,039. Scott McTominay is enjoying his best goals return for a season already with five in 17 matches. Meanwhile, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is the latest youngster to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford with nine appearances in all competitions so far this term and impressive, assured performances beyond his 18 years.

Manager - Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag joined United from Ajax in April, 2022 having won two Dutch doubles - the Eredivisie title and KNVB Cup - in 2018/19 and 2020/21 - and a further title in 2021/22. As we all remember, he was also in charge of that exciting Ajax side that we managed to overcome in such thrilling circumstances to reach the final of the Champions League in 2019. He certainly steadied the ship at Old Trafford and in an impressive first season last term, won the League Cup, reached the FA Cup Final and finished third in the Premier League, taking United back into the Champions League for 2023/24.

Last time we met

It doesn't get much bigger than United for a first home game of the campaign - and it doesn't get much better than a 2-0 win in the August sun at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This was Ange Postecoglou's first home natch in the Premier League, and Pape Matar Sarr's day with a dream first goal for us to open the scoring in front of the South Stand. A raid forward from Ben Davies then prompted an own goal to see us home.
