Amy James-Turner: “We are much more capable of putting on a better performance”

Amy James-Turner was on the scoresheet at Brisbane Road on Sunday afternoon but was disappointed to fall to a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

After falling behind on 23 minutes, where Adriana Leon slotted past Barbora Votikova after a charging run into the box, Amy grabbed the equaliser in the closing stages of the first half as she leapt the highest to Eveliina Summanen’s free-kick and guided her header past Daphne van Damselaar.

It was the defender’s first-ever WSL goal – her second for the Club – and changed the momentum going into the second half, with Bethany England and Martha Thomas both having opportunities, however, Jordan Nobbs’ thunderous strike from the edge of the box proved to be settler as Carla Ward’s side left the capital with three points.

I’m happy to get the goal but there’s an overriding disappointment coming away from the game.

Speaking in a post-match interview with SPURSPLAY, Amy said: We are really disappointed. We don’t want to lose games at home and I don’t think we showed our best today. We know we are much more capable of putting on a better performance.

“We started the second half relatively well, we started moving the ball and switching the play a lot better than we did in the first half. They won a corner and I felt we could have dealt with the long ball better in that instance. But, we need to continue to work on our set-pieces defensively to make sure we tighten up in those areas.

“It’s good that we are creating chances, but I think the next step is obviously finishing them. The international break has probably come at a good time for people, we will go away and reflect and come back better for the Arsenal game after the break.”

Reflecting on netting her first-ever goal in the league and the first of the season, she said: “I am happy to be on the scoresheet, I set myself a target at the start of the season to be more of a presence from attacking set-pieces as I have relatively good aerial ability. I’m happy to get the goal but there’s an overriding disappointment coming away from the game.”
