Robert Vilahamn was pleased with the impact of his substitutes as we booked our place in the quarter-final of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup on Saturday evening after a 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic.
Kit Graham - who was introduced from the bench in the second half - scored the only goal of the game, a low-driven effort from the edge of the box into the back of the net to secure the victory at Brisbane Road against her former club.
However, prior to the goal, it was looking like one of those evenings in front of goal, hitting the woodwork twice from Eveliina Summanen and Bethany England, while seeing a number of chances glance past the post, but Robert heaped praised on the players coming off the bench to change the game after the break.
“I speak a lot about the performances and the performance in the first half was not great from us,” speaking in his post-match interview with SPURSPLAY.
“But, when you have those evenings, especially in the cup, then you need a good squad for players to come in and help you win the game, so I’m happy with that as we are now in the quarter-final.
They have performed together, fought together and trying to do what we were talking about
“Kit scored a great goal, but I think Jess [Naz] and Martha [Thomas] came in with a lot of structure for us, then Matilda brought good energy and good set-pieces, so I think all the five of them coming on did well and you need that type of a squad because you need substitutes making a difference, which they did.
“Overall, we won the game, we have a clean sheet, and scored a nice goal, so it’s a good day.”
That was our third game in seven days – facing Liverpool away and Manchester City at home earlier this week – and the boss spoke about the efforts of his player during a tough week and the importance of finding ways to win.
Robert added: “You want to win every game and we haven’t been able to do that this week, but we finished with a win and get some days off for the first time in a long time, before preparing for Aston Villa next week.
“It has been three games in seven days and they have performed together, fought together and trying to do what we were talking about. I’m very happy with the players finding a way to win this game.”
