The report in full...
The visitors took the lead during a bright start at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Pascal Gross scoring from the penalty spot after Micky van de Ven had fouled Danny Welbeck but we fought back to equalise just after the hour mark as Pape Matar Sarr converted from close range.
And, just when it looked like a second successive draw, two of our substitutes combined for a 96th-minute winner, Johnson popping up at the far post to tuck home Heung-Min Son’s cross and move us up to fourth place in the table.
Incidentally, our goal made it 36 consecutive Premier League games in which we’ve scored, putting us joint second with Manchester United and Liverpool.
There was less than a minute on the clock when Brighton almost grabbed an early lead, Welbeck robbing van de Ven and breaking away down the left, before cutting inside Rodrigo Bentancur’s sliding challenge but Guglielmo Vicario was equal to his left-footed curler, pushing it away at full stretch.
While we struggled to get going, Brighton were looking menacing and went ahead on 17 minutes from the penalty spot. Van de Ven caught Welbeck in the area, referee Sam Barrott pointed to the spot and VAR confirmed the decision. Gross stepped up and sent Vicario the wrong way from 12 yards.
We grew into the game and had a glorious chance to level on 22 minutes when Bentancur’s superb ball released Richarlison down the inside left channel but he couldn’t beat Jason Steele with his shot, while James Maddison curled just wide from Richarlison’s pass minutes later.
Vicario was called into action again in the 29th minute, tipping away Kaoru Mitoma’s angled drive after Brighton again won the ball high up the pitch but we finished the half on top and could have gone in level, Steele making an excellent save low down to his right to keep out Dejan Kulusevski’s effort as he burst into the area.
The first opportunity of the second period saw Steele comfortably gather Maddison’s 25-yard free-kick, while Timo Werner’s run from the left flank ended with his shot deflected wide for a corner. We were really increasing the pressure in search of the equaliser and it finally came in the 61st minute, Kulusevski’s lovely pass releasing Sarr, his cross intended for Richarlison was cut out but the ball bounced back off the post to the Senegal international midfielder and he tucked it home from a tight angle.
We then made a triple substitution with Son, Yves Bissouma and Johnson replacing Bentancur, Kulusevski and Werner and that gave the crowd another lift following the goal, but we lost momentum as Brighton came back into the game and they had two chances to retake the lead.
First, Mitoma skipped past a couple of chances down the left and his cut back was sent just wide by Ansu Fati before van de Ven got across to make a superb block from Facundo Buonanotte’s effort from the edge of the area.
Both sides pushed for the winner without really creating that one clear chance to steal the points until deep into the final minute of six added on. Then, Richarlison slid the ball down the left for Son and his perfect low cross was turned in at the back post by Johnson to spark wild scenes of celebration!

Ange's verdict...
"The players have showed bags of character all through the year dealing with things, whether that’s in game or trying to get results, and it was there again, we pushed them right until the end and I’ve a real belief if we keep pushing, we’ll get the outcome. There was a lot I didn’t enjoy today. We were really poor in the first half. Some of that was Brighton are a very good side and very disciplined, well coached, and we lacked a real discipline and took some liberties with and without the ball. That was really disappointing. The second half was better. We had a good response. Obviously, when you are chasing the game, you’re always susceptible to counter attacks, but I thought for the most part we handled it okay and probably just edged it in the end, deserved the points, but plenty to work on."
