Opposition watch | Wolves' latest form and players to watch

Thu 15 February 2024, 15:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Here's a closer look at Gary O'Neil's team...

Form

Wolves made it one loss in seven when they beat us late at Molineux in November, a run that moved them up from 16th to 12th in the Premier League. They've played 12 matches in the league since then, winning five, losing five and drawing two, peaking when they moved up to to 10th when they came from 1-0 down to beat Chelsea 4-2 at Stamford Bridge on 4 February. Matheus Cunha inspired that win with a hat-trick - but their talisman is now out after suffering a hamstring injury in a 2-0 loss last time out against Brentford.

Players to watch

Cunha lined up as part of the front three in Gary O'Neil's 3-4-2-1 system and was replaced by Tommy Doyle against Brentford last weekend. Doyle loves to get on the ball and was credited with inspiring Wolves' turn around against us back in November. Max Kilman sees a lot of the ball in that defensive three - 1,365 passes this season places him in the the Premier League's top 20 (just behind Cuti Romero) - where he's alongside the experience of Craig Dawson, now 33, and Portugal international Toti. At the other end, Pedro Neto has two goals and eight assists so far this term, while Pablo Serabia, who scored such a fine equaliser against us at Molineux, has added one more goal since then, at Old Trafford.

Manager - Gary O'Neil

A midfielder who enjoyed a 19-year career playing for the likes of Portsmouth (2000-2007), Middlesbrough (2007-2011) and West Ham (2011-2013), O'Neil almost made it to 550 career appearances, winning Player of the Season at his last club, Bolton, in 2018/19. He moved into coaching and was part of Scott Parker's team that helped AFC Bournemouth to promotion in 2021/22. Parker departed in August, 2022 with O'Neil initially taking over as caretaker, then permanent Head Coach in November. Bottom of the table in March, a run of six wins in nine saw the Cherries move up to 13th, before finishing 15th. Bournemouth then brought in Andoni Iraola from Rayo Vallecano but O'Neil didn't have to wait long - he was appointed Head Coach at Molineux in August.

Last time we met

Five days after that game against Chelsea on 6 November, we travelled to Molineux without Cuti Romero, Micky van de Ven, James Maddison and Destiny Udogie. Neverthe;ess, we started brightly and led via Brennan Johnson's early goal. We never really got going, but were still leading 1-0 as the game ticked into added time, when Pablo Sarabia volleyed home the equaliser. Six minutes later - 90+7 - Wolves won it through Mario Lemina.
