Opposition watch | Liverpool vs Spurs (WSL)

Fri 02 February 2024, 09:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs Women are back in Barclays Women’s Super League action on Sunday afternoon (2pm) as they face Liverpool at Prenton Park.

Here’s a closer look at the Reds…

Form guide

After going four games unbeaten at the end of 2023, it has been a tough start to the New Years for the Reds, suffering back-to-back defeats to Manchester City (5-1) and Arsenal (2-0). They have picked up notable victories already this season against title hopefuls, Arsenal, beating them 1-0 at Borehamwood back in October, before coming from behind to secure a win over rivals Manchester United in December. The Reds are currently sat fifth in the table, ahead of us on goal difference, and just three points behind Man United. They also booked their place in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup fifth round after a narrow 1-0 victory over Bristol City, with Gemma Bonner scoring late on.

Players to watch

Look out for Sophie Roman Haug who is the Red’s current leading goalscorer so far this campaign with four goals in 12 appearances in her first full season in the WSL, joining from AS Roma in the summer. Experienced defender Gemma Bonner rejoined the club for a second spell in January, 2023, and has started in every WSL game this season, while scoring the winner in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Bristol City. Missy Bo Kearns is a gifted, home-grown midfielder who has progressed through their set-up and into the first-team, playing a big role in their Women’s Championship title success in 2021/22 campaign, scoring four goals in 19 appearances. Young forward, Mia Enderby, has also enjoyed a positive first season in the WSL after leaving Sheffield United last summer, featuring in seven games, and netted her first goal for the Reds in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup fixture against Manchester City.

Manager – Matt Beard

Beginning his coaching career with Millwall Lionesses, Matt Beard became the manager of the Chelsea for the 2009/10 campaign, where he guided them to FA Cup final in 2012. He then took the position of Liverpool for the 2013/14 season and led them to back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014. Following a spell in the United States with Boston Breakers, Beard returned to England with West Ham United and took them to an FA Cup final 2019, losing to Manchester City at Wembley, before an interim role at Bristol City, guiding to FA Women’s Championship title at the end of the season. He returned to Liverpool in May, 2021, almost seven years since his first spell ended and guided them back to WSL in his first season back.

Last time out

Points were shared at Brisbane Road when we faced the Reds in the reserve fixture back in November. A wonder goal from Celin Bizet, where she took off from half-way and roamed through the Reds’ defence before firing home from the edge of the box, gave us the lead but Haug’s header saw the points shared.
