"Control has been the key word for Liverpool this season, with Arne Slot adding patience to the pressing and pace of his predecessor's team..."

Possession, possession, possession

For all the thrill that came with Jurgen Klopp’s brand of football, and the success it brought, there were times when the chaos led to vulnerability towards the end of the German’s tenure.

Slot wanted Liverpool to have more composure and got the message across quickly in pre-season, while switching the team from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1.

"In the past it was a rush to get the ball back, a bit too direct, up and down, up and down,” explained Curtis Jones as early as mid-July. “Now we want to have all the ball and completely kill a team.”

The Reds lose possession roughly 20 per cent less than they did last season.

Rebalancing midfield

The managerial change has worked out well for Jones, a more technical, patient player, who has since gone on to claim a first cap and goal for England.

Alexis Mac Allister has also been able to work to his natural game of dictating play and creating chances.

Last season, the World Cup winner could be used as a ‘number 6’ but was overrun at times in the 2-1 loss at Spurs last season, even before the two red cards.

However, the emergence of a player from within the squad, rather than a new signing, has freed up Mac Allister and solved a long-standing Liverpool problem.

Gravenberch reborn

When Martin Zubimendi’s move from Real Sociedad broke down in the summer, Reds fans worried about who would anchor midfield - a position vacant since Fabinho’s departure.

Wataru Endo did a fine job when required last season, especially in the Carabao Cup Final win over Chelsea, but the 31-year-old was not the long-term solution.

The big surprise has seen box-to-box midfielder Ryan Gravenberch take on the more disciplined role - protecting the back four while also being able to take the ball on the half-turn near his own area.

His ball-carrying ability has never been in question and from defensive midfield, Gravenberch drags Liverpool forward by running through the opposition.

Number 10 position

The subtle change in formation sees Liverpool operate with something closer to a ‘number 10’, a role Jones has occupied at times - but has mainly been taken up by Dominik Szoboszlai.

However Slot recently said: “For an attacking midfielder at Liverpool his numbers need to go up." He’s only scored one Premier League goal this season.

Like Klopp, Slot allows Trent Alexander-Arnold to invert into midfield, but that can leave the right-sided centre-back without a passing option - perhaps something Spurs can exploit.

Fulham also targeted the Liverpool right last week, with 49.5% of their attacks coming down that side.

The striker situation

In attack, Mo Salah’s numbers are as good as they’ve ever been - 13 goals and 9 assists in 15 Premier League games.

Cody Gakpo has taken his Euro 2024 form in to this season, showing what a weapon he can be cutting in from the left.

An understanding with Salah has developed too - with the goal for 1-1 against Fulham just the latest example of Gakpo arriving at the back post to meet a cross from the Egyptian.

Luis Diaz therefore sometimes plays at centre-forward, with Darwin Nunez still adjusting to the new managers methods. The Uruguayan has a physicality and pace that unsettles defences, but does he have the technical ability to work in Slot’s team?

Diogo Jota was preferred prior to his injury and was outstanding on his return last weekend, coming off the bench to score Liverpool’s second goal in a 2-2 draw with 10-men.

Plenty of options for Sunday’s visitors.
