Rangers come into this week's fixture having endured a mixed campaign in all competitions so far this season.

Philippe Clement's side currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership table, already 11 points behind leaders Celtic after just 15 games.

In Europe they were knocked out of the Champions League qualifying rounds, resulting in their participation in the Europa league, where they currently sit eighth in the league table.

Their run has seen them win three of their opening five only dropping points twice, first in a draw away at Olympiacos and then in a heavy 4-1 defeat to Lyon at Ibrox.

A shaky start in all competitions from Clement's side saw them win just one of their opening four games in all competitions, as a back-to-back draws with Hearts and Dynamo Kiev were followed by a win against Motherwell and then defeat in the reverse leg at Ibrox against the Ukrainian side.

Back-to-back wins against Ross County and St. Johnstone in the league and cup - in which they scored eight without reply - suggested they had had turned a corner, only for that to come to a shuddering halt with a resounding 3-0 defeat in the Old Firm derby at Celtic Park.

A four-game winning run then followed after the international break, beating Dundee United 1-0 at Tannadice Park, before dispatching Dundee 3-0 in the Scottish League Cup, kicking off their Europa League campaign with a 2-0 win over Malmo and beating Hibernian 1-0 thanks to Jack Butland's penalty save.

A heavy 4-1 defeat to Lyon at Ibrox then kicked off a run which saw them lose three out of their six games in October, as despite former-Derby man Tom Lawrence levelling the game, Mallick Fofana and Alexander Lacazette's braces took the points for the French side.

Back in the league, Václav Černý's brace took the points against St. Johnstone before a shock, late 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

Victories against Steaua Bucharest in Europe and over St. Mirren in the league followed but Jack Butland's penalty save couldn't prevent another defeat to Aberdeen, who are currently Celtic's closest competition for the title..

Since that game the Light Blues are unbeaten in eight games and have only dropped points twice in draws with Dundee United and Olympiacos and dispatching Motherwell, Hearts, Nice, St. Johnstone, Kilmarnock and Ross County, having only conceded twice in those wins.

That leaves the Glasgow-based side third in the Scottish Premiership, two points behind second-placed Aberdeen with a game in hand, having booked a spot in this Sunday's Scottish League Cup final at Hampden Park and in eighth in the Europa League table, above us on goal difference and six points behind leaders Bilbao with a game in hand.

European history...

Founded in 1872, Rangers are a familiar name in European football, only missing out on competing in a UEFA competition 10 times since 1956 - including a run of 31 consecutive seasons of at least reaching the play-off rounds.

Despite their rich history of competing in continental football, the club only have one European honour to their name, the 1972 European Cup Winners' Cup - a campaign which saw them beat Rennes, Sporting Lisbon, Torino, Bayern Munich and then Dynamo Moscow in the final.

Although that triumph wasn't without its controversies, as the Teddy Bears had initially been knocked out by Sporting on penalties after a dramatic 6-6 draw on aggregate, with UEFA confirming that Rangers had gone through on away goals and the tie shouldn't have gone to spot-kicks.

The club have also been runners-up in European competitions five times throughout their history, losing out in the same competition twice in 1961 and 1967, being beaten by Fiorentina and Bayern Munich respectively.

After that success they lost out in the final of the UEFA Super Cup, losing both legs of by an aggregate scoreline of 6-3 to Ajax in 1972, before having to wait over three decades for the chance to compete in another European final.

That came in 2008 when they lost out to Zenit St. Petersburg in the UEFA Cup, beating Panathinaikos, Werder Bremen, Sporting and Fiorentina en route to that final, but it wasn't to be for Walter Smith's side who fell to a 2-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Giovanni van Bronckhurst then guided the club to the Europa League final two years ago, a run which saw his side start out in the play-off round, before finishing runners-up in their group and beating Borussia Dortmund, Red Star Belgrade, Braga and RB Leipzig to reach the final in Seville.

A closely contested game ended 1-1 after extra time, with German side Eintracht Frankfurt prevailing 5-4 on penalties.
