Tue 03 December 2024, 13:30|Tottenham Hotspur

A busy festive schedule is under way for our Under-21s who take on Sutton United in the National League Cup tonight - live on SPURSPLAY.

After a long pause during the recent international break, Wayne Burnett's young side returned to action in style on Friday lunchtime as we dispatched Middlesbrough 6-1 in Premier League 2 at Hotspur Way.

That kicked off a run of three games in seven days and up next is a trip to south London to face the National League opponents in our penultimate group game (kick-off 7.30pm UK).

We come into this one in second place in Group D, with four points thanks to two draws and two penalty shootout victories so far this campaign, and we trail leaders Dagenham & Redbridge on goal difference.

The Opposition

Sutton United were relegated after a three-year spell in the football league last season, as promotion-winning manager Matt Gray was sacked at Christmas and former Millwall talisman Steve Morison unable to keep them up.

The Amber Army went unbeaten in their opening five league games upon their return to the fifth tier, as an opening day draw with Tamworth - our FA Cup third-round opponents - was followed by back-to-back wins over Altrincham and Wealdstone, and further draws against York City and Eastleigh.

However, the end of August and start of September saw them record three defeats on the bounce against Forest Green Rovers, Boston United and Dagenham and Redbridge, but Morison's side bounced back to win three of the next four, only dropping points in a draw with Yeovil Town to bounce back up to eighth in the National League table.

October proved tricky with three defeats from four league games, only winning their final game of the month against Braintree, however they progressed into the first round proper of the FA Cup for the fourth consecutive season thanks to victory over Chertsey Town.

Three more games without a win followed, including a cup defeat to Combined Counties League side Sheerwater, however the Yellows were boosted by a spirited performance in the FA Cup narrowly being edged out by Birmingham City at the VBS Community Stadium.

Three wins from three have since followed, against Maidenhead United, Solihull Moors and AFC Fylde, with the side going 295 minutes without conceding in all competitions coming into this one.

That run leaves United in seventh in the National League table just inside the play-off places on goal difference, and with a game in hand on York City, Barnet and Gateshead ahead of them.

One to watch

With nine goal involvements from his 20 league appearances so far this season, Will Davies is currently the Amber Army's top scorer this campaign.

Davies moved to the capital in July after a seven-month spell at fellow National League side York City, having previously featured for then-National League South side Braintree Town for the first half of the 2023/24 campaign.

The 25-year-old rose through the ranks after grabbing the headlines with Southern League Premier Division Central team Leiston, where he scored over fifty goals in two seasons, helping them to the play-offs in the 2022-23 season and winning the Supporters’ Club Player of the Year award.

Since joining the Yellows he's started 18 of their 20 league games, completing over 1,600 minutes and being involved in a third of all goals, with six goals and three assists to his name so far this term.

Ref Watch

Tomorrow's referee is Stephen Parkinson, he'll be assisted by Ashley Allen and Alex Mathieson, whilst the fourth official is Steven Hughes.
