Team news from Newcastle | Wilson out, Howe on Willock injury

Fri 30 August 2024, 15:55|Tottenham Hotspur

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Joe Willock's injury isn't expected to be serious - although the forward will remain sidelined for our Premier League clash at St James' Park on Sunday (1.30pm UK).

Willock scored a quickfire opening goal for the Toon in their Carabao Cup draw at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening before limping out of the action with a thigh injury with only 15 minutes on the clock. Newcastle went through on penalties.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Howe was asked for the latest on Willock, and he said: "Joe had a scan yesterday, an early scan. It is relatively good news. I don't think it is a serious injury, but it is early, so we will re-scan again in a few days again just to confirm that."

Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali returned to Toon's starting XI at Forest following the end of his 10-month ban from competitive football, while defender Matt Target was back on the bench at the City Ground after injury. Meanwhile, Howe said that striker Callum Wilson was 'continuing his rehabilitation from injury' earlier this week, but his return, 'won't be before the international break'.
