Spurs vs Everton | Form guide - Everton's start and recent record on the road

Fri 23 August 2024, 12:25|Tottenham Hotspur

Everton started brightly in their Premier League opener against Brighton last weekend - only to succumb to a 3-0 defeat at Goodison Park.

Described by The Observer's Andy Hunter as 'starting in relentless fashion', Everton were on top, with big diagonal passes out from the back, particularly from James Tarkowski to Jack Harrison on the right, causing Brighton problems in the first half. Jason Steele had to be at his best to turn away Harrison's strike with the score still goalless.

However, Kaoru Mitoma opened the scoring on 25 minutes - against the run of play, according to Sky commentary - and after an Everton penalty award was overturned by VAR, Danny Welbeck made it 2-0 before Ashley Young was sent off on 66 minutes. Simon Adringra added a late third.

Sean Dyche put the second and third goals down to 'two big mistakes' that were 'hard to legislate for' after what he described, up until then, as a 'thorough performance'.

Tim Iroegbunam (from Villa) was the only one of three main summer arrivals to start against Brighton with Iliman Ndiaye (Marseille) coming off the bench and Jake O’Brien (Lyon) an unused substitute.

Everton's last five results...

27 July - friendly - Salford City 2-1 Everton (Garner)
30 July -  friendly - Coventry City 3-0 Everton
3 August - friendly - Preston 0-3 Everton (Calvert-Lewin, O'Brien, Lindstrom)
10 August - friendly - Everton 1-1 AS Roma (Calvert-Lewin)
17 August - Premier League - Everton 0-3 Brighton

Ahead of last week's big kick-off, Everton played five friendlies - a draw at Sligo Rovers, losses at Salford City and Coventry City before beating Preston 3-0 and drawing against Serie A side Roma.

Last season, Dyche guided the Toffees to Premier League safety despite an eight-point deduction. They finished 15th, 14 points clear of the relegation zone, and would have been 12th without that points deduction.

Everton picked up five wins in their last eight games in 2023/24 - keeping a clean sheet in all five. However, they failed to win in their last 11 away matches (D4 L7).

Now they arrive in N17 for their first road trip of 2024/25, and our Premier League homecoming after we opened our campaign with a 1-1 draw at Leicester City on Monday evening.

Speaking at his press conference on Thursday, Dyche said: “You want to go to these places - you’d class Tottenham as a top-six side, most people would - and it’s a challenge. We are thin in numbers but we have to go down there and take on the game like we always do.”

Last season - Spurs 2-1 Everton
