Matter of stats | Winning run continues in first home game of a Premier League campaign

Tue 27 August 2024, 15:55|Tottenham Hotspur

Our convincing 4-0 victory against Everton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday has extended our winning sequence in terms of the first home match of a Premier League season.

Heung-Min Son's double, Yves Bissouma's thunderbolt and Cuti Romero's header to mark his 100th appearance for the Club saw us home and made it four wins on the trot on our return to N17, a run going back to 2021 - all with clean sheets.

It's quite a contrast to the early years of the Premier League era. Indeed, we lost our first home games of the first two Premier League seasons in 1992 and 1993 and we'd reached one win in seven when fortunes started to turn around in 1999.

A 3-1 win against Newcastle at the Lane in 1999 set us on our best unbeaten run of eight years, a run coincidentally ended by Everton in 2007.

However, since 2012, we've only lost twice in our first home game of a season - Chelsea in 2017, and Everton again in 2020 - stretching the sequence to two defeats in 13 and, as already stated, four wins on the trot on Saturday.

First home game - quick stats

- We won only one of our first seven opening home matches after the Premier League era kicked-off in 1992/93
- Our first back-to-back wins were 3-1 victories against Newcastle in 1999 and Ipswich in 2000
- Our best unbeaten sequence is eight games between 1999-2006
- We've won six of our last seven first home games, with the only loss in that run against Everton in 2020
- We've now won four on the trot - Manchester City, Southampton, Manchester United and Everton - all with clean sheets
