Loan watch | Veliz hits late winner for Espanyol

Alejo Veliz struck a late, late winner for RCD Espanyol against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Saturday.

The young striker, 20, went close with a header in the first half as his side came from 1-0 down before a grandstand finish at the Estadio Cornellà-El Prat in Barcelona.

Rayo Vallecano had a late chance deflected wide, Espanyol broke from the resulting corner but the chance looked to have gone when Irvin Cardona's one-on-one was saved by Daniel Cardenas. Walid Cheddira picked up the loose ball and found Alejo, whose fine first touch took him away from Florian Lejeune before he picked out the top corner from 12 yards, sparking jubilation from the Periquitos fans.

That was the Argentina youth international's first goal for Espanyol in the fourth appearance of his loan so far this season.
