Williams on target again as Under-21s draw with Cray

Cray Wanderers 2-2 Spurs U21s

Jaden Williams' fourth goal of pre-season - this one from the penalty spot - completed the comeback as our Under-21s recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Cray Wanderers on Tuesday evening.

In our last friendly at this level before the start of the new Premier League 2 season on 16 August, we dominated the possession in the opening stages in front of a bumper crowd at the new Flamingo Park but suddenly found ourselves two goals behind mid-way through the first half as Nyren Clunis and David Smith netted within two minutes of each other during what was the non-league side's best spell of the game.

We soon got back on track, though, with Damola Ajayi rifling home from outside the box, before Williams won and converted a penalty with a quarter-of-an-hour left, adding to his summer tally.

Isthmian League Premier Division side Cray, managed by our former players Neil Smith and Tim O'Shea, provided a stern test, but we looked bright, helped by the mature performances of George Abbott and Tyrese Hall in central midfield after they travelled on the first team tour of Asia over the last fortnight.

Yusuf Akhamrich was a lively influence on the left early on, his shot being deflected over, while Ajayi threatened from the wide right areas, finding the side netting with a shot before sending in a cross which Maeson King headed towards goal, forcing Shaun Rowley into a save down to his left.

Cray's Quade Taylor headed wide at the back post in a good chance from a set-piece, but it was on the break that the hosts took the lead on 22 minutes, Clunis going clean through down the centre of the pitch to stroke past Josh Keeley. Two minutes later, Smith stunned us with a second, firing home after Cray won the ball mid-way inside our half.

Ajayi got us back into it six minutes before the break, pinging a shot into the net from the same area outside the box that he'd been threatening from throughout the first period and after a big chance apiece at either end after the restart - Charlie Edwards firing off-target for Cray and Max Robson denied by Rowley after being set up by some individual brilliance from Hall - we were back level on 75 minutes, Williams bundled over in the box by Taylor before dusting himself down to blast high into the net from 12 yards. Both sides made a raft of changes over the course of the second half but nobody was able to fashion any real chances to win as the game ended all square.
