Ange Postecoglou said the players 'gave everything' as we dominated against West Ham but had to settle for a 1-1 draw at London Stadium on Tuesday evening.
A typically physical, tough battle in E20 started perfectly for us when the ever-developing combination of Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner struck again, this time with just two minutes on the clock as Timo zipped past Vladimir Coufal on the left before crossing for Brennan to convert.
We got into those positions on both bylines time after time with Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro frequently joining in but the eventual story of the match was that we couldn't capitalise on those situations further. We ended with 68% possession and 13 attempts on goal, but only four on target.
West Ham only threatened occasionally on the counter-attack but levelled via a set piece on 19 minutes when Kurt Zouma climbed highest to meet Jarrod Bowen's corner and guide the ball home almost off his back into the far corner. We kept knocking and knocking right until the last minute of added time when Gio Lo Celso touched Deki Kulusevski's cross into the path of Destiny, but he volleyed straight at Lukasz Fabianski.
Speaking to our Review Show, Ange reflected: "It's always a tough game here, they've a big, strong team, they sit deep and don't allow you too much space and time. I thought for the most part we handled that pretty well.
"We scored a great goal and we had some more chances to replicate that, that we missed out on. Obviously, they then scored from a set piece, and they are such a threat from that, but I thought we handled the rest of them really well and defensively, their transition moments and counter-attacking, again, for the most part, we coped with.
"I just thought in our front third we lacked a little calmness and clarity. We got into some good areas and should have got some better outcomes. It's a bit of belief, a bit of learning, a better understanding from the guys in terms of when we get into those areas, the options we have.
"Like I said, it's a difficult place to come, they're a tough team and the guys gave everything. I can't fault the effort of the lads tonight, we know we can be better in certain areas but at the same time, we handled a really tough team fairly well away from home."
