Opposition watch | West Ham's players to watch and form since we last met in December
Tue 02 April 2024, 10:15|Tottenham Hotspur
After Saturday's win against Luton it's a quick turn around as we travel to E20 and the London Stadium to take on our old rivals West Ham in the Premier League this evening (8.15pm UK). Here's a closer look at the Hammers...
Form
West Ham's win in N17 at the start of December was part of a run of one defeat in 11 matches that peaked at the end of that month with successive wins over United (2-0), Wolves (3-0) and Arsenal (2-0) in the space of 11 days. That run ended with defeats in the return matches against United and Arsenal - a 6-0 home loss - and Forest, but the Hammers had picked up again with four unbeaten before Saturday's defeat at Newcastle, where they looked nailed on to take that unbeaten run to five matches at 3-1 up with 13 minutes left, only to lose 4-3. They are seventh going into tonight's clash and, having lifted the Europa Conference title last term, remain on course in the Europa League, with a quarter-final against Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen on the horizon.
Players to watch
Jarrod Bowen is in fine form and up to 15 goals in the Premier League - the same as Heung-Min Son - with his form earning a run off the bench in England's recent friendly against Brazil, then a start against Belgium. Ghana international forward Mohammed Kudus continues to impress and he's registered seven goals and four assists in his first season in the Premier League. He's a real threat on West Ham's counter-attack with the likes of Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio all ready to spring forward. However, Edson Alvarez, the Mexico midfielder, is suspended and will be a miss.
Manager - David Moyes
Glasgow-born Moyes was a defender in a playing career spanning 18 years and spells at Celtic, where he started back in 1980, Cambridge United, Bristol City, Shrewsbury, Dunfermline, Hamilton Academical and most notably Preston, who he played for between 1993-1998 before taking over as manager. He moved to Everton in 2002 and in 11 full seasons, achieved five top-six finishes before succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013. Things didn't work out at Old Trafford and after spells at Real Sociedad and Sunderland, he joined West Ham in 2017. Initially steering the team away from trouble, Moyes led the Hammers to sixth in 2020/21 and then to the semi-finals of the Europa League in 2021/22. They were back in Europe in 2022/23 after finishing seventh in 21/22 and this time went all the way in the Europa Conference League, beating Fiorentina 2-1 in the final - West Ham's first major trophy win in 43 years.
Last time we met
A tough one to take on 7 December. In a match we dominated - 717-184 passes, 75% possession, 23 efforts at goal to West Ham's 11 - West Ham somehow ended up taking maximum points. Cuti Romero headed us into the lead on 11 minutes but we couldn't find a second goal and ended up being punished by two somewhat fortuitous goals - Jarrod Bowen couldn't believe his luck when a shot from Mohammed Kudus took two deflections and rolled into his path with an open goal 10 yards out. West Ham's winner then came from a defensive mix-up that still saw James Ward-Prowse's shot hit the post and bounce back to him to tap home. Yep, one to forget!
