The Football Association has today (Thursday 18 April), alongside the Premier League, announced changes to the FA Cup format ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
A agreement between the two bodies which will run for a minimum of six seasons, the alterations will now see the competition return to being contested exclusively on a weekend after five years of the fifth round being played in midweek.
For the first time in the competition's history, the fourth and fifth rounds, plus the quarter-finals will now be played on weekends exclusive of Premier League fixtures while the dates which fourth round will be playable on will now run from Friday to Wednesday, allowing for six days of FA Cup football.
The biggest change however will see the removal of replays from the the first round proper onwards in light of the expansion of UEFA competitions - changes which are also set to come into play from next season. In our history, we have seen 101 of our ties taken to replays, including three of our FA Cup Final victories (1901, 1981 and 1982).
Finally, the FA Cup Final will now be played on the penultimate weekend of the Premier League season and on a Saturday exclusive of Premier League games. There will be no Premier League fixtures played on the Friday prior to the final to allow full focus on the Wembley showpiece.
