Derby stories

Rafa van der Vaart

Before Harry Kane and now Heung-Min Son's continued exploits in the north London derby, the fixture certainly lit a torch for Rafael van der Vaart in the early 2010s.

A fans' favourite for what always seems too short a spell in Lilywhite - 2010-2012 - Rafa tapped in to what this fixture means to everyone connected with the Club.

He responded with four goals in three starts against the Gunners, including a goal and two assists in our memorable comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at the Emirates in November, 2010. That remains our only Premier League victory at Arsenal's new stadium, one of only two away wins in N5 in the Premier League era (since 1992/93).

Speaking to us last week, you can almost feel the excitement in Rafa's voice when it comes to reminiscing about this fixture, what it meant to him and means to our fans...

"I was told, ‘Rafa, there is one game, and this is it, if you do well in this game, you’ll live forever here’..."

"I always said to every player who comes to a club, ‘you need to understand what’s important for the club’..."
Rafa van der Vaart, April 2024

"I was told, ‘Rafa, there is one game, and this is it, if you do well in this game, you’ll live forever here’. I kept that in my mind.

"At the end of the day, I didn’t grow up here, but then you notice on the streets how it means so much."

"Winning there 3-2 after not winning there for so long. That was so special."

"I remember the first half, it was maybe my worst game ever! I was so bad. At half-time we were losing 2-0. Harry (Redknapp) came in, told us to sit down and listen, he made one substitution, and everything changed. It was like two different games in one day, and we won. Taking the penalty... the pressure I felt at that moment, knowing we hadn’t won there for almost 20 years, was incredible. After taking the penalty, I was so relieved because, to be honest, I was so nervous. After the third goal, I thought, ‘wow’. To see how much it meant for the fans… I knew it was a big game, but I never realised it was so deep.”

STRIKE 2

Spurs 3-3 Arsenal
20 April, 2011

Another electric derby at the Lane, again we trailed early, Rafa levelled, but we were quickly 3-1 down before Tom Huddlestone drove home for 3-2 just before the break...

STRIKE 3

Spurs 3-3 Arsenal
20 April, 2011

... of course, Rafa wasn't finished in this thriller - with 20 minutes left, Wojciech Szczesny upended Aaron Lennon and Rafa stroked home from the spot for 3-3.

STRIKE 4

Spurs 2-1 Arsenal
2 October, 2011

How apt - Rafa's fourth and final NLD goal (in four appearances/three starts) was recorded as the Club's 10,000th goal - and contributed to a win at the Lane, with Kyle Walker's thunderbolt securing victory in the second half.

"Our team was one of the best teams I played in..."

"I had an interview the other day and I was talking about Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Ledley King, there were so many names I almost forgot the likes of Scotty Parker, Emmanuel Adebayor, Aaron Lennon, Crouchy, Jermain Defoe, I could continue. We were so unlucky we didn’t win something. I left too soon, and I still regret that, it was the worst decision I ever made, but that’s how it is. I always said that when I went on the pitch, I gave everything I had, and I wanted to give the people something special. I tried to do that. I had some good days, some bad days - that’s football - but what I can say to the fans is that I always played with so much pride for this team. I always say this was the most special time of my career."
