The battle for set-piece superiority | Arsenal vs Spurs

Fri 22 September 2023, 11:00|Tottenham Hotspur

This weekend's huge Premier League clash with Arsenal will throw up some intriguing tactical match-ups and the battle for set pieces is certainly one area to keep an eye on.

Our bright start under Ange Postecoglou has seen us pick up 13 points from our opening five league games and currently level on points with the Gunners who themselves have also won four games and drawn one ahead of Sunday's encounter at Emirates Stadium (kick-off 2pm UK), with us sitting in second and two places above our rivals on goal difference.

In one of the most hotly-anticipated fixtures in the calendar, one area that could influence the outcome are corner kicks given our 15 goals from corners are bettered only by our north London rivals who sit top of the pile with 16 since the start of 2022/23.

Both sides were jointly reliant on this form of attacking set piece last term, netting a league high 13 goals apiece. We achieved success in this area by targeting near-post runs, flick-ons and mixing it up with short-corner routines, picking up some valuable points throughout the campaign with Harry Kane's late equaliser at Chelsea and Rodrigo Bentancur's last-gasp winner against Bournemouth coming from corner situations.

Emphasis in this area has continued under Ange with Cristian Romero and Richarlison scoring from corners already this season. Locked at 1-1 with Burnley in first-half stoppage time at Turf Moor earlier this month (2 September), we did well to keep James Maddison's initial corner alive before the ball fell to 'Cuti' who rifled in a shot from 18 yards out to give us the lead in emphatic fashion.

Our next came deep into stoppage time against Sheffield United in our lasting outing. Ivan Perisic's peach of an inswinging corner was met by Richarlison who did well to avoid his marker at the front post and head in the 98th-minute equaliser to spark the dramatic comeback which led to our historic victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

We will also need to remain organised and focused at the other end of the pitch with Mikel Arteta's side winning their last two league matches from corner situations. The first coming from Bukayo Saka's deep inswinging corner to Declan Rice at the back post whose deflected shot gave them the lead against Manchester United and then Leandro Trossard's winner at Everton via a short-corner routine last time out.

Given the threat that both teams possess in attacking set pieces, corners will provide a fascinating tactical battle of their own this weekend and an area in which our Head Coach will be working hard to target in order to give us any edge possible ahead of his first taste of north London derby action.
