Spurs 2-1 Liverpool | Ange’s verdict: “When it happens like that, you know there’s something to build on”

Ange Postecoglou praised the players for sticking to the game plan until the end - and getting their rewards with another late, late show to take maximum points in dramatic style against Liverpool.

Joel Matip’s own goal won it for us in the final seconds of six minutes of added time after Pedro Porro whipped a low cross across the face of goal.

It was reward for keeping going - just as we did against Sheffield United here a fortnight ago - in tricky circumstances as Liverpool were reduced to 10 and then nine men in the second half. Jurgen Klopp reorganised his side to sit deep and that low block proved a tough nut to crack.

Earlier, Curtis Jones was sent off for a challenge on Yves Bissouma on 26 minutes, Heung-Min Son converted Richarlison’s cross for 1-0 on 36 minutes only for Cody Gakpo to level in added time in the first half.

Diogo Jota was then dismissed after receiving two yellow cards, Alisson produced world-class saves to deny James Maddison and Son and it looked like we were heading for a draw – until we had the final word, maintaining our unbeaten start in the Premier League.

Speaking to the Review Show on SPURSPLAY, Ange reflected: “It wasn’t an easy game for us, we knew it wouldn’t be, and even in the circumstances, we had some unique challenges. For some of these guys, this will be the first time they’ve faced that type of scenario, and for the most part, we handled it okay. Again, getting that late winner helps build the belief and spirit in the group.

“I thought 11 vs 11 it was a pretty even game, we had our moments, they had theirs, they went down to 10 and until we scored we were good, then we lost our way a little, rushed things, tried to do things individually and actually allowed them back into the game with the equaliser.

“The thing about Liverpool, even with 10 men, they are equally as dangerous because the game plan is the same, they play on mistakes, they have world-class players up front who can hurt you. I thought the second half was better because we stayed a bit calmer, maintained our pressure in the right areas and got our reward.”
