Spurs 2-1 Sheffield United

Premier League

A stunning stoppage-time turnaround saw us claim all three points against Sheffield United, as goals from Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski produced the most dramatic of Premier League victories on Saturday afternoon.

Here are the key moments of an amazing victory in N17...

  • Goalless after a dominant first half in which Wes Foderingham denied Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma, Manor Solomon and James Maddison.
  • The Blades took the lead against the run of play through Gustavo Hamer in the 74th minute.
  • Substitutes Ivan Perisic and Richarlison combined for our 98th-minute equaliser, the Brazilian glancing home from a corner.
  • Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is sent into delirium as Dejan Kulusevski fires home a winner in the 100th minute.
  • It's the latest winning comeback in Premier League history, beating our own record at Leicester in January, 2022.

The report in full...

In what was a feisty game with 12 yellow cards, one sending off and plenty of stoppages throughout, our dominant display looked like we were going to end empty-handed after Gustavo Hamer struck against the run of play in the 74th minute, only for Richarlison to level it up in the 98th minute and Kulusevski to fire home a winner which sparked the most incredible celebrations.

It preserved our unbeaten start to the league season and kept us in second place in the table, even if that seemed an unlikely scenario late in the game! It's also our best start to a league season since 1965/66.

Both sides had sights of goal in the early moments, Pape Matar Sarr forcing Wes Foderingham into a low save at one end before Oliver McBurnie’s effort looked like it might trouble Guglielmo Vicario but it hit his own team-mate Cameron Archer on its way and we cleared the danger.

We were dominating the game in terms of possession and went close again on 19 minutes, Yves Bissouma drifting past two defenders in the area but Foderingham smothered his shot from close range and then had to push away a Heung-Min Son curler for a corner.

Soon after, Vicario made a fine stop from James McAtee although Archer was probably offside in the build-up, while Foderingham then kept out 20-yard efforts from Manor Solomon and James Maddison. Five minutes before the break, Maddison fired a couple of yards wide after lovely link-up play between Sarr and Solomon and the half ended with a chance for the visitors, McBurnie heading Jayden Bogle’s corner straight at Vicario.

The pressure and the atmosphere definitely cranked up a notch after the break as we pushed for the opener, with Son and Kulusevski having shots blocked and Solomon curling just wide in the 62nd minute. Penalty appeals were then waved away after Son went down in between Anel Ahmedhodzic and Chris Basham, while Solomon fizzed an effort over the bar as we kept up the momentum.

The threat of the counter was always there though and Vicario was grateful to see McAtee’s shot fall into his arms after it deflected off Porro. But, in the 74th minute, the Blades won a throw-in which went all the way through to Hamer and he hit a low left-foot shot which crept in off the far post.

That prompted a triple substitution with Richarlison, Perisic and Brennan Johnson coming on, the latter for his Spurs debut and the former Nottingham Forest man had the ball in the net on 87 minutes only to be denied by the assistant’s flag.

Richarlison then headed over and Foderingham denied Kulusevski at his near post as the clock ticked over into 12 minutes of stoppage time but finally we got the goal we deserved. In the end, it was just a plain old corner that did the trick, Perisic curling in for Richarlison to glance a header past Foderingham.

That lit a renewed spark under the whole stadium and suddenly it was game on. Time, incredibly, was still on our side and we took full advantage with yet another attack as Richarlison laid off to Kulusevski and he struck a right-foot shot home in the 100th minute to send the place crazy!

The final moments saw McBurnie sent off for a second yellow card before the final whistle sounded on the most dramatic of victories in N17.

Ange's verdict

“There was a fair bit going on today! It’s great. You want to see all aspects of our team developing and today was as much about the character as the football. It was great to see the players react. It was a difficult game. There just seemed to be a lot of dead time, a lot of stoppages, no great flow. For the most part we handled it okay. There were times when we got frustrated. It’s something that we’re going to have to cope with but, particularly after we went 1-0 down, I really liked the way the boys went about it. We stayed calm, clear-headed and worked our way into the game in a really good way considering all the chaos that was happening.”
