Maddison starts as England draw against Ukraine

Sat 09 September 2023, 19:05|Tottenham Hotspur

James Maddison started and earned his first England cap as a Spurs player in the Three Lions' 1-1 draw against Ukraine in UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying on Saturday evening.

The in-form playmaker started on the left of England's front three with Harry Kane central and Bukayo Saka on the right.

'Madders' was given license to drift in from the left by Gareth Southgate and often found himself in the '10' position centrally, trying to find pockets of space against a packed Ukraine defence at the Tarczynski Arena in Wroclaw, Poland.

Things didn't fall for him on the night - he was in space ready to collect Jordan Henderson's pass in the box, but the pass was blocked, he twice broke through centrally but couldn't take in passes from Jude Bellingham and Kyle Walker. He also linked play throughout, often with his back to goal, the best example three sharp one-twos around the box that eventually led to Saka striking the crossbar.

Earning his fourth cap overall, James was eventually substituted on 65 minutes. Walker levelled Oleksandr Zinchenko's 26th-minute opener for Ukraine in the 41st minute, the draw ending England's perfect start to qualifying Group C, but they remain six points clear.

Maddison's start makes him the 78th Spurs player to represent England.
