Burnley 2-5 Spurs

Premier League

Heung-Min Son scored a wonderful hat-trick to help us on our way to a magnificent five-star victory against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

The skipper was at his clinical best with three top-class finishes at Turf Moor to complete his fourth Premier League hat-trick, levelling the scores after Lyle Foster had given the Clarets an early lead and then netting twice in three minutes midway through the second half after Cristian Romero and James Maddison had scored superb goals themselves. Josh Brownhill netted a late second for Burnley.

It meant we maintained our unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign and saw us climb up to second in the table in these early stages of the season.

There were only four minutes on the clock when the home side opened the scoring, Foster converting from Luca Koleosho’s cut-back down the left and that got the Turf Moor crowd rocking. For a while, we found life difficult in the Lancashire sunshine as Burnley looked for a quick second, but we slowly worked our way back into the game and levelled on 16 minutes. Pedro Porro’s superb pass over the top set Son away on a two-v-two attack, he found Manor Solomon who returned the ball to the skipper and he clipped a wonderful finish over James Trafford to level.

After Zeki Amdouni fired just wide from 20 yards out for the Clarets, we bossed the remainder of the half and went close to a second on 34 minutes, Maddison playing a one-two with Pape Matar Sarr and his curling effort was pushed away by Trafford.

Instead, it took to the very end of the first period before we went ahead – and what a screamer it was! Maddison’s cross into the box was challenged for by Dejan Kulusevski and then Sarr, before the ball rolled out to Romero on the edge of the area and he thumped home right-footed off the far post.

Maddison was denied by Trafford early in the second half and substitute Josh Brownhill sent a dipping 25-yard effort just over the crossbar before we added our third. Destiny Udogie was the creator, winning the ball out on the left and finding Maddison in acres of space 20 yards from goal, he had time to line up a shot and curled a beauty past Trafford.

We needed a stunning save from Guglielmo Vicario to preserve our lead moments later, tipping Foster’s deflected shot over the bar with a one-handed, diving stop. But that was as good as it got for the home side as we started to dictate the game, playing with freedom and flair and finding the goals to match.

Son was the beneficiary, scoring twice in three minutes to secure his hat-trick. His first came on 63 minutes, Solomon running through the Burnley midfield and sliding the ball back for the South Korea international to curl home right-footed, before Porro picked Son out with a stunning through ball and he converted with some assurance for his treble.

With the points secured, the final 20 minutes were fairly uneventful as we managed the game well until stoppage time, when Brownhill played a one-two with Josh Cullen and slotted past Vicario. But it didn’t dampen the mood as we celebrated an excellent victory on the road.

Ange's verdict

“I really liked the performance. Of course, going a goal down isn’t the best way to start a game away from home, but it happens and, particularly after midweek, you’re kind of looking at the reaction of the boys, and I thought they were just outstanding. They kept their heads, played our football, committed to working hard and slowly got to grips with the game. Once we got a hold of it, I thought we were dominant all the way through, so credit to them. We were a little wasteful in the first half, I thought we missed some opportunities in there, but second half we were very clinical. I really just liked the way we went about it. We knew Burnley would be really aggressive on our press and when we were playing out, but we played through that really well and had the quality in the front third to finish it off.”
