Micky van de Ven once again came off the bench for the Netherlands on Monday night as they secured a stoppage-time 1-0 win over Greece in qualifying for Euro 2024.
The centre-back, fresh from his senior international debut as a substitute against France on Friday night, won his second cap in Athens, replacing Quilindschy Hartman in the 74th minute with the game finely poised at 0-0.
He helped to ensure there was no way through for the hosts for the remainder of the contest, with Virgil van Dijk’s 93rd-minute penalty at the other end sealing a dramatic 1-0 win for Ronald Koeman’s side.
The result edged the Netherlands up to second in Group B, above the home team on the head-to-head rule.
They now know that victory against both Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar in their final two qualifying games will secure a spot at next summer’s tournament finals.
Dejan Kulusevski started for Sweden in their Euro qualifier in Belgium on Monday night, but the match was abandoned at half-time with the score at 1-1 following an incident in Brussels city centre.
