Spurs 2-0 Fulham

Premier League

We returned to the top of the Premier League table on Monday night after goals from Heung-Min Son and James Maddison gave us a derby victory over Fulham.

Here are the key moments of our fourth straight home win this season...

  • Superb Guglielmo Vicario save to deny Joao Palhinha with game goalless.
  • A commanding first half, with Heung-Min Son giving us the lead in the 36th minute.
  • James Maddison's first home goal made it 2-0 nine minutes after the break.
  • Our 14th win in 16 Premier League games against Fulham put us two points clear at the top of the table.

The report in full...

Skipper Son gave us a deserved first-half lead at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Maddison doubled our advantage nine minutes after the break to put us in control and, after we snuffed out a string of late opportunities for the visitors, the win saw us move two points clear at the summit.

As we did against Luton Town last time out, we made a strong start with Bernd Leno having to save with his legs to deny Son in the second minute before Micky van de Ven volleyed over from 10 yards out after Cristian Romero’s header into the danger zone.

While we were dominating possession, Fulham always looked like they could cause problems on the break and they almost opened the scoring on 12 minutes, only for Guglielmo Vicario to make a superb save diving to his left to push away Joao Palhinha’s header from an Andreas Pereira corner.

We saw a couple more chances come and go after Maddison teed the ball up for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – making his first start in the league this season in place of the suspended Yves Bissouma - but his 25-yard drive was straight into the arms of Leno before Dejan Kulusevski led a breakaway shortly after and found Richarlison, but he curled just wide from the edge of the area.

The breakthrough came in the 36th minute as Fulham tried to play out from the back, Richarlison stole possession and found Son just outside the visitors' area, he cut inside one challenge and curled beautifully into the top corner.

It could have been more before the interval as well with Destiny Udogie and Kulusevski having shots blocked in quick succession before the Swedish forward went close again following a break from Romero.

Fulham opened up the second period with a couple of promising attacks that fizzled out to nothing before we doubled our lead with another goal that was all about our high press. This time it was Hojbjerg nipping in to win the ball back, finding Son with his pass and he slid the perfect ball in for Maddison to slot past Leno, his first goal at home for Spurs.

More defensive uncertainty almost led to our third as Calvin Bassey was caught in possession inside the area by Maddison but Tim Ream got across to block the midfielder's shot before we made a number of changes in the closing stages - Brennan Johnson, Alejo Veliz and Giovani Lo Celso entering the fray.

Fulham gave it one last push for the final few minutes and almost pulled a goal back in the 84th minute but Vicario made another fine stop to deny Raul Jimenez, while Hojbjerg made a great block to prevent Tom Cairney’s effort from troubling our goalkeeper.

And when Emerson Royal raced back to block Harry Wilson’s effort after the Fulham midfielder had burst through on goal, any danger of a comeback from the visitors was extinguished.

Ange's verdict

"It was a good win, the boys worked hard, our work without the ball was again outstanding, as it has been all year, and that’s what won us the game. In the first half we were good, we had to be patient, Fulham were well organised so we had to bide our time a bit, probably could have scored a couple more goals with the chances we created and put the game to bed. In the second half, we were just really wasteful with the ball, really poor, as poor as we’ve been all year to be honest. Guglielmo Vicario was outstanding in a couple of moments to keep a clean sheet for us. We’ll take the win, it’s another good win for us, but plenty to learn."
