Eveliina brace helps Finland maintain perfect record

Eveliina Summanen netted two early goals – the second of which was set up by Club team-mate Olga Ahtinen – to set Finland on the way to a 2-0 victory away to Croatia in the UEFA Women’s Nations League on Tuesday night.

Midfielder Eveliina needed only four minutes to open the scoring before Olga teed her up for the second in the 11th minute.

Both players went on to complete the full 90 as Finland made it four wins from four without conceding a goal to sit top of Group B2.

There was no such luck for our other players involved in Nations League action on Tuesday, though. Angharad James played 90 minutes in Wales’ narrow 2-1 defeat in Denmark, while Luana Buhler did likewise for Switzerland as they lost 7-1 at home to world champions Spain. Martha Thomas, meanwhile, came on as a 61st-minute substitute for Scotland but couldn’t prevent them from suffering a 1-0 home reverse against the Netherlands.

Grace Clinton was an unused substitute for England in their 3-2 defeat away to Belgium, with Celin Bizet also remaining on the bench for Norway as they battled out a goalless draw in France. Barbora Votikova was an unused substitute for Czech Republic in their 2-2 home draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Rosella Ayane’s Morocco secured a 2-0 home win over Namibia, making it 4-0 on aggregate, to advance to the next stage of Olympic qualifying while Shelina Zadorsky helped to keep a clean sheet and completed 90 minutes for Canada in a 2-0 home friendly win over Brazil.

Wednesday morning saw Zhang Linyan put in a 90-minute shift for China as they drew 1-1 at home to South Korea, but the result was not sufficient for either side to qualify for the Olympics, with North Korea topping the group to advance to the final stage of the Asian qualifiers.

With the international action now at an end for our players, all roads lead to Sunday’s return to Women’s Super League action at home to Everton (2pm UK).
