Spurs 1-1 Everton (WSL) | Robert’s verdict: “It’s always tough when you don’t score that second goal”

Robert Vilahamn couldn’t help but rue some of our missed chances after Everton escaped with a point from Sunday’s Women’s Super League encounter at Brisbane Road.

Fresh from her first senior England call-up over the international break, Grace Clinton headed us into a deserved lead just before half-time but we found visiting goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan in inspired form as we failed to convert a number of other opportunities over the course of the game.

Everton had chances of their own as well, but it was from a penalty that they equalised five minutes from time, Aurora Galli firing home after Clinton was deemed to have pushed over Heather Payne in the area, ensuring the match ended 1-1.

“It was a tough finish to the game, of course,” Robert reflected on SPURSPLAY. “I thought we were not so good in the first half, actually – I felt we struggled a little bit with the possession and how we played football, but the players have been gone for 10 days (on international duty) so it takes time to get back in shape. We finished that half with a beautiful goal and created a few chances but in the second half we were really good, we created chances, we pressed much better, we should go for more goals and then they get a penalty and then it’s 1-1.

“It’s always tough when you don’t score that second goal. We need to learn how to be sharper in some situations. It’s like a learning process for all of the players. We need to learn as a team as well – it’s the third penalty we’ve given away (this season), so we need to be better there.”

Robert went on to explain what the players can do to avoid a similar situation when Liverpool come to visit next Sunday (12.30pm UK).

“We need to look at this game and how we can solve the last third a little bit better in some situations and how we can make sure we get a little bit sharper in our finishing,” he added. “That said, we create chances, we have the ball and do some good stuff so I’m not worried – I’ve actually seen some good stuff here today, but it’s more like how we can actually finish those chances with a goal. We need to practice that, we need to discuss that and then of course we need to defend a little bit better.”
