Opposition watch | Leicester vs Spurs (WSL)
Sat 18 November 2023, 08:10|
Tottenham Hotspur
We return to Women’s Super League action against Leicester City at Brisbane Road on Sunday (3pm UK). Here's a closer look at the Foxes...
Form
Leicester started brightly with back-to-back WSL wins against Bristol City and Everton, toppled Liverpool in their first match in the Conti Cup and then grabbed a point at United. However, it's three defeats on the spin since then, although they made City fight all the way in a 1-0 loss (12-17 shots, 49-51 per cent possession) before going down to a late goal at Liverpool and then falling to a 6-2 loss against Arsenal after leading 2-0 at half-time last weekend.
Players to watch
Experienced and versatile, Janice Cayman moved to the WSL from Lyon this summer, having won two Division 1 Feminine titles and two Champions Leagues with the French club. She has 138 caps for Belgium to her name after a career spanning 18 years and spells in Belgium, USA, France and now England. Lena Petermann won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Germany and has two goals in three games for the Foxes after joining from Montpellier. Finland striker Jutta Rantala also has two goals in three games for Foxes after joining from Vittsjo GIK. There's also a familiar face in midfield – Josie Green, part of the squad that gained WSL status here at Spurs and joined Leicester last season.
Manager – Willie Kirk
Edinburgh-born Kirk's first managerial job in women's football was at Hibernian in the Scottish capital where he landed both the Scottish Cup and League Cup. His first job in England came at Bristol City, followed by an assistant's role at Manchester United. He moved to Everton in the WSL in December, 2018, and having joined Leicester City Women as director of football, took over the managerial reins in November, 2022.
Last time we met
A vital 1-0 win in the WSL in March last season came courtesy of a goal worthy of any stage from Bethany England. Picking the ball up in the left channel, Bethany drove to the left corner of the penalty area, cut inside two players and unleashed a dipper that sailed over goalkeeper Janina Leitzig and nestled into the far corner. That was one of 12 goals in 12 WSL games as the England striker helped steer us clear of relegation last term.
