Aston Villa 2-1 Spurs
Premier League

A goal in each half gave Aston Villa the points on a disappointing afternoon at Villa Park on Saturday, with Harry Kane's stoppage time penalty our solitary response.
We went into the game having won all eight of our previous visits to Villa in all competitions but struggled in the Midlands sunshine as goals from Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz put the home side in command, before Kane slammed home his 27th Premier League goal of the season from the spot.
Kane had earlier been denied one-on-one by Emiliano Martinez in a great chance while Heung-Min Son had the ball in the net in the final seconds but was denied by one of several offside flags over the course of the game. The result saw Villa join us on 57 points but we stay sixth on goal difference.
We never really got going in the first half and hadn't registered a single shot at goal by the time the half-time whistle blew. The hosts, however, dominated and took the lead in the eighth minute when Leon Bailey picked out Ramsey who smashed the ball past Fraser Forster into the bottom corner.
They had other chances too, Forster saving well to deny Bailey from an Ollie Watkins cut-back just after the half hour, before Watkins just failed to get on the end of Alex Moreno's excellent cross from the left and Emiliano Buendia struck the woodwork after another swift attack just before the break.
We did have a glorious chance to level early in the second half when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg nicked the ball off Douglas Luiz 30 yards from goal and released Kane in on goal but his effort was saved by Martinez. Just after the hour, Yves Bissouma made his return from injury with his first appearance since early February and we started to get a foothold in the game, with another substitute Dejan Kulusevski sliding a shot just past the far post on 64 minutes.
But no sooner had we had our best spell in the game than Villa doubled their advantage, Douglas Luiz curling home a 25-yard free-kick after Cristian Romero was penalised for a foul on Watkins.
Then, four minutes from time, Kane was brought down by Martinez in the area and, after a lengthy VAR check, referee Peter Bankes awarded a spot-kick. Up stepped the skipper, who sent the goalkeeper the wrong way as he drilled home his penalty to give us a glimmer of hope. We pushed forward in the closing stages and Son had the ball in the back of the net just seconds from the end, but it was ruled out.

Ryan's verdict...
"I thought they were better than us in the first half, although I don’t think Fraser made too many big saves, because he didn’t have to, but they were definitely the team that had a bit more. I thought that changed in the second half. I felt like we were the team that were pushing a bit more. We had a big moment at 1-0 where their goalkeeper pulled off an outstanding save but then, I’m not how long afterwards, they scored from a free-kick, so it’s disappointing. The Premier League is tough, and you have to be on it for 95 minutes. Unfortunately, today, I don’t think we were. I felt like they came out with more energy and it’s not something you want to be doing, going a goal down so often. We have to be better at that and try to improve that because we do have two more games, important games to the end of the season."
