Wolves 1-0 Spurs

Premier League

Adama Traore's 82nd-minute goal consigned us to a 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

Having dominated much of the opening period and hit the woodwork either side of half-time through Pedro Porro's free-kick and Heung-Min Son's angled drive, we fell behind with eight minutes left as Traore hooked an effort in off the underside of the crossbar after an initial good save from the impressive Fraser Forster to deny Raul Jimenez.

It was a feisty affair at Molineux and despite a number of stoppages in the first half, notably when Wolves' striker Diego Costa was carried off on a stretcher after landing awkwardly following a challenge with Oliver Skipp and again for treatment to Max Kilman and Ben Davies in separate incidents, we controlled the tempo, having 11 shots at goal to Wolves' zero before the break.

Among them, home goalkeeper Jose Sa sharply claimed Son's effort before making a flying save to keep out Dejan Kulusevski's curler coming in off the right flank. The Wolves stopper was there again to beat away Ivan Perisic's diving back-post header and we went closer still when Pedro Porro's superb free-kick crashed off the crossbar deep into first-half added time following a foul on Perisic as we broke forward on the counter.

The home side changed things up at the break, making a double substitution and switching to three at the back and that ultimately ended up paying dividends for Julen Lopetegui's team as despite Son hitting the bar with a driven left-footed effort two minutes after the restart, they began to get forward more and it needed an outstanding save from Forster with his right hand to claw away Jimenez's 55th-minute header.

Clement Lenglet, Son and Pedro Porro all tested Jose Sa as we sought a breakthrough, but Wanderers had the better of the late chances and after Joao Moutinho and Neves brought further saves out of Forster, their fellow substitute Matheus Cunha should have done better when through on goal in the right channel after a mistake by Lenglet, but he could only find the side-netting.

Kane lifted a decent attempt just off-target for us with a little under a quarter-of-an-hour left but eight minutes from time, the hosts broke the deadlock when Forster saved well from Jimenez's angled effort in the box, only for Traore to cushion the loose ball in off the bar from just inside the area. Jimenez had the ball in the net again a few moments later but was denied by the offside flag, while an untidy passage of play in added time saw Traore's low ball across the right byline hit the outside of Forster's near post as the game ended in frustration for us once again.

Team news saw us make five changes from the team that lined up against Sheffield United in midweek as Cristian Romero, Lenglet, Oliver Skipp, Kulusevski and Kane returned to the starting XI.

Cristian's comment...

“My thoughts are that we expected a reaction (after losing to Sheffield United in the FA Cup in midweek), we expected to react from the start of this game, and the first half was completely under control. We played very well in the first half, had three good chances to score and to kill the game, but we were not ready to do it, and after that in the second half we struggled a bit. We needed time to adapt to some changes they made, then we lost some duels, their striker won some duels and that created a good pace for them. We defended well, they created two chances and one was a goal. This is the story of the game. Also, you have to be nastier when you have the possibility to score, you have to be aggressive. We had the chances but we didn’t realise how important it was to score in the first half. It’s a lesson we have to learn - when you are in control of the game, you have be clinical and kill the game.”
