Five... wonder goals against Wolves

Thu 02 March 2023, 16:45|Tottenham Hotspur

We've scored some incredible goals against Wolves down the years - including a couple of the most important in the Club's history - take a bow, Martin Chivers and Ricky Villa!

As we prepare to travel to Molineux again in the Premier League on Saturday (3pm), here are five of the best...

03.05.72 - Martin Chivers - Wolves 1-2 Spurs

Martin Chivers scored 174 goals during his eight-year stay at Spurs - and one of his very best was against Wolves in one of the most important matches in the Club’s history. Back in May 1972, we’d gone all the way to the final of the inaugural UEFA Cup and, wouldn’t you just know it, faced familiar opposition in the shape of fellow Division One outfit Wolves. In what was a two-legged affair, the first game took place at Molineux and it was our England forward who headed home the opener on 57 minutes, only for the home side to level through skipper Jim McCalliog. But, three minutes later, Alan Mullery dispossessed John McAlle and Chivers picked up the ball out on the left, moved infield towards goal and then left fly from fully 30 yards with a right-foot blast that flew past Phil Parkes. It meant we headed back to north London with a 2-1 lead and completed the job at White Hart Lane with a 1-1 draw that saw us lift the trophy.

15.04.81 - Ricky Villa - Spurs 3-0 Wolves

In May 1981, Argentine midfielder Ricky Villa scored a wonder goal in our FA Cup Final replay win over Manchester City, one that would go on to be voted as Wembley Stadium’s ‘Goal of the Century’ in a poll at the turn of the millennium. It was a strike that was all about Villa’s quick feet and close control as he weaved through the City defence to score. But just a month earlier, Villa scored another sensational goal, this time against Wolves in the FA Cup semi-final to help us on our way to that Wembley showpiece. After a 2-2 draw at Hillsborough, we met Wolves again in a replay, this time just down the road at Highbury. Garth Crooks had already netted twice to put us in control at half-time when Steve Archibald won the ball on halfway and Crooks fed Villa out on the right flank. Our number five moved into a central area some 25 yards out but this time, there were no silky skills, just a flash of his left boot which sent the ball arrowing into the top corner to put us 3-0 up and secure our place at Wembley.

06.12.03 - Stephane Dalmat - Spurs 5-2 Wolves

French midfielder Stephane Dalmat had all the credentials to be a real star when he arrived at White Hart Lane ahead of the 2003/04 season on loan from Internazionale. A dynamic wide player with great skill, wonderful ball control and a real powerhouse, he made his debut against Chelsea in September 2003, but we only really saw glimpses of his ability due to a few injuries. He showed just what he could be capable of against Wolves in December 2003 when he scored a gem of a goal. Replacing Gus Poyet with 14 minutes remaining and the score at 3-1, both sides had scored again before the game moved into the 90th minute and Dalmat collected a pass from Stephen Carr down the right. Showing all his strength and skill, he powered past Lee Naylor and Mark Kennedy and, as the ball bounced up nicely for him, Dalmat hit a shot that rocketed into the back of the net, leaving Michael Oakes no chance in the Wolves goal.

29.12.18 – Spurs 1-3 Wolves - Harry Kane

Harry Kane sits just one goal shy of his 250th Spurs goal going into today’s game and there won’t be many better than the one he scored against Wolves at Wembley in our last game of 2018. We were flying at the time, having lost just once in our previous 13 matches which included wins over Everton (6-2) and Bournemouth (5-0) and a draw at Barcelona to secure our place in the knockout stages of the Champions League. And we looked set to continue that form when we took the lead against Wolves in the 22nd minute. Heung-Min Son pushed the ball forward to Kane, who advanced down the right flank, chopped inside Willy Boly and then hit a searing left-foot rocket which flew into the top corner. Unfortunately, it all unravelled after that as the visitors hit back to win 3-1 which took the shine off Kane’s goal at the time, but looking back four years later, one fully appreciates just how good a strike it was.

15.12.19 - Lucas Moura - Wolves 1-2 Spurs

Just under a year after Kane’s goal described above, Lucas Moura took centre stage with a stunning strike against Wolves. All thoughts at the end of the game were about Jan Vertonghen’s 91st-minute headed winner which clinched all three points for us, but earlier in the clash came a goal of undeniable quality from our Brazilian forward. Just eight minutes were on the clock when Lucas picked up possession midway inside the Wolves half, showed strength to shrug off the attention of Diogo Jota, skipped past Jonny’s challenge on the edge of the area, worked a yard of space to move away from Romain Saiss and then hit a fierce angled drive past goalkeeper Rui Patricio. It was a goal which summed up all of Lucas’ brilliant technique and tenacity and set us on the way to another win over Wolves.
