Welcome back to our special feature for 2022/23 - 1 from 30 - as we continue to mark 30 years of the Premier League.
English football's new dawn kicked-off on the weekend of 15/16 August, 1992 as the FA Premier League replaced Barclays League Division One, ending a structure of Division One-Four that had been in place since 1958. Thirty years on, the Premier League is amongst the most watched and most valuable sporting leagues in the world.
In this series, we're featuring a match from those 30 years that corresponds with our next fixture - next up, David Ginola runs Forest ragged in a 2-0 win in November, 1998...
Spurs 2-0 Nottingham Forest - 21 November, 1998
Chris Armstrong and Allan Nielsen grabbed the goals as another David Ginola masterclass lit up the Lane in this win against Forest back in November, 1998.
The French superstar was central to everything that mattered in this victory. First up, he was dragged down by Steve Stone for a yellow card in the first half, then fouled again by the midfielder early in the second half to reduce the visitors to 10 men.
He then provided the opening goal with a trademark raid down the left and cross converted by Armstrong on 58 minutes. We were well in control and secured victory when Ginola - who else? - was fouled by Scott Gemmill. This time, Darren Anderton whipped in the free-kick and Nielsen rose well to head home.
This was the season where we'd knock on the door of a cup double. We won the League Cup against Leicester City and then reached the semi-final of the FA Cup, where we were beaten by Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
Ginola was magnificent, and it's worth noting that in a 1998/99 season where Manchester United won the treble of FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League, it was Ginola who claimed the individual double of PFA Player of the Year and Football Writers' Footballer of the Year.
Spurs: Baardsen, Carr, Scales, Campbell (C), Edinburgh (Sinton), Anderton, Calderwood (Clemence), Nielsen, Ginola, Iversen, Armstrong (Allen).
