Stalemate in Under-21s' friendly at Enfield Town

Enfield Town 0-0 Spurs U21s

Tue 18 July 2023, 22:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Our Under-21s did everything but score as Tuesday night's pre-season friendly at Enfield Town ended goalless.

Once again playing to a large crowd in the ever-popular annual summer fixture just a short trip from our Training Centre, we had the majority of the chances during the game but found Town's second-half goalkeeper Adi Connolly in inspired form, the custodian tipping Brooklyn Lyons-Foster's shot onto the post before pulling off superb saves to deny Rio Kyerematen and substitute Damola Ajayi as we tried in vain to force a breakthrough.

The hosts, who fielded five summer signings in their starting line-up, rarely threatened, with only a late effort from Lewis Taaffe forcing half-time substitute Luca Gunter into action.

Yago Santiago had a couple of early openings before Dante Cassanova met Nile John's left-sided cross with a great header in the centre of the box mid-way through the first half, but Town's Rhys Forster was equal to it with a fine save to tip it over the bar.

The home side made wholesale changes at the break but still they couldn't find a way to meaningfully test us at the back, with most of the action coming at the other end as Lyons-Foster's deflected effort was turned onto the upright by Connolly before Kyerematen skewed a shot over the bar after a speedy solo run from Santiago.

We should have scored with a quarter-of-an-hour left as a mistake at the back saw John push forward into the box and square for Kyerematen, but his angled effort was well blocked by Connolly who also saved a fine strike from Ajayi away to his right a few minutes later, with John unable to turn the rebound on target.

Lyons-Foster tested Connolly again from distance before a late chance at either end went begging, Taaffe's effort sharply saved by Gunter before the returning Jude Soonsup-Bell saw his rising shot claimed by Connolly as the game ended without score.
