'Me | Eric Dier' – a fascinating documentary now available on SPURSPLAY

The second instalment of our ‘Me’ documentary series, Me | Eric Dier is now available to watch on SPURSPLAY.

Me | Eric Dier is an original production for SPURSPLAY created by our in-house production team which documents the long-serving defender’s career from his early days growing up in Portugal, where he was signed by Sporting CP’s academy and his progression all the way to the first team by the age of 18.

From there, as we all know, Eric joined Spurs in 2014 and has now amassed 361 appearances in all competitions for us, taking him into the top 25 of our all-time appearance makers, including 270 in the Premier League, where he’s in our top five. A versatile player who started life here as a right-back, then moved into midfield and then back into central defence, a leader who has captained Spurs and England, Eric has been a key cog in teams that have qualified for the Champions League five times, reaching the final in 2019.

But it hasn’t all been plain sailing, and Eric talks for the first time about the illness that set him back in 2019 and how tough it was to miss out on England’s Euro 2020 squad – and what it meant to work his way back into the squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Our production team also meet the people who knew Eric best from his time in Portugal, with anecdotes from his early mentor and PE teacher Andy Robinson from Bergau Sports Centre, Paulo Gomes, Sporting’s Academy Director, the famed Chief Scout, Aurelio Pereira - the man who discovered Cristiano Ronaldo - and Jose Joao, Eric’s coach.

Eric also takes us away from the footballing limelight to his farm in the Cotswolds. “I’m more of a countryside person than a city person,” he tells us. “We’re learning as we go here, but it’s real.”

Spurs fans will also be delighted to see Eric’s former team-mates and close friends Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen and Matt Doherty all make appearances, plus the likes of Harry Kane and Ryan Mason. “I’m more than a footballer,” Eric says. “What I’m remembered for as a person, for me, is the most important thing.”

SPURSPLAY explained
